Someone gave me the parts to make a powder horn today. That stirred up and interest in getting a black powder pistol. Would that be something that I could deer hunt with as long as it was a large enough caliber and a long enough barrel? Does anyone have a suggestion on a good gun or kit? I would be interested in a flint lock if that was an option.

Good question scrub. I've wondered the same. From what I understand, the "black powder pistols" that I have wont qualify. For a "black powder handgun" to qualify for deer it must be a single shot with .50 caliber or larger shooting a minimum .44 caliber bullet and the barrel must be 12" or longer. So for instance, my 1858 US Army pistol in .44 caliber doesn't qualify as I understand the regulations. But, I'm no expert and look forward to some feedback here as well!

You can use the single shot BP guns like what we called pirate pistols. There are rules on ball size and barrel length. You can't use the BP revolvers.

If I were building for Indiana I would contact Rice barrels and get a 1-20" twist .45 barrel tapered 15/16" at the breech, 13/16" at the muzzle. An octagon to round would also be good. I would ship it to Cabin Creek and have him inlet it in a chunk of curly maple and do the Ky pistol profile. I would use an L&R Manton ( TOW calls it Bailles) or a L&R late English flintlock. Brass fittings with a single trigger. knobmountainmuzzleloading.com/stocks.html

For flintlock I would stay away from CVA, Traditions... You are learning flintlock and just do not need the aggravation a lot of the big name suppliers WILL give you. Chambers, L&R, Davis all produce good locks. I finished my flinter about this time of year. I used it exclusively at all the matches and woods walks I went to that year. My caplocks sat, even my "meat gun". By the time hunting season rolled around I had it figured out.

Wow! Thanks for all that information. What would the cost of building a gun like that be? I might be biting off more than my wallet can chew.

Do like Johnny Cash did with his Cadillac one piece at a time. I would guess about $375 to $425 in flint. Figure around 150-175 for the lock, 90 for the barrel. Wood and profile around 100. Rest of the parts about 50 or so. Just a guess. You can go here there will be some parts dealers there.

Very cool. Ton of info there stevein and I've talked to Jim Cotton in the past and he's been very friendly and helpful. I might try to make it up to that on Sautrday the 18th!

I didn't catch that part of the rule. I was focusing on finding something with a 12" barrel. Thanks

I have been poking around a little and the big hang up is the barrel length of 12". I do not know why they settled on this barrel length but a lot of the DNR rules seem to be a mystery. I think the 1-20 twist is more for light loads than hunting loads so I do not see why a cut off rifle barrel would not work. This kit would work for a caplock but again the barrel is too short. www.midwayusa.com/product/1064623414/lyman-plains-muzzleloading-pistol-unassembled-kit-percussion-9-3-4-blue-barrel The barrel would be an easy swap but I guarantee the breechplug threads are metric. Chambers started making pistol kits that would be just what you want but they are top end. As they say you pay for quality. www.flintlocks.com/pistols.htmAbout $650 for the kit.
