Since season is over, when should I place minerals out for the deer?

I try to freshen up my mineral lick around the 1st of May or thereabouts. I use what the old timers called "salt and pepper" in the spring so the does will get essential nutrients to help the fetus develop healthy and strong. For that hot and humid period of the last of July, first of August time period it gets a 50lb. bag of mixing salt. Has absolutely nothing to do with "horn porn" as some of the "know it all crowd" will reply. It's all about the health and well being of the area. i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad195/DanInIndiana/Salt%20Lick%201.jpg

I place out those brown 50 pound mineral blocks out for Deer, Squirrels, & Rabbits starting in late Winter (Mid February). Been doing this for years and it has always worked out well. Replacements are placed out during early Summer around Mid-June.

They survived about ten thousand years before any of us were born or visited our first Rural King.

NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man survived with sharpened sticks and fire too. No electricity, and no motorized equipment. I suppose you don't have any of the modern conveniences?

I don't think their hooves can grab a steering wheel, an electric cord nor do they have pockets to pay for gasoline.
There's a difference between surviving and thriving, and if I am putting them in my freezer to eat, I look at them no differently than someone putting out minerals for beef cattle. Since most of the time I don't have have the time to butcher my own, and the processor I use charges by the animal, bringing in one that is 180 pounds is more cost efficient than one weighing 100 pounds. If minerals will help them metabolize more food, so much the better.

The day I'm done hunting for year I open mineral licks and start supplemental feeding. Usually around Dec 1st. I try to choose products with no more than 30% salt in. Currently using Whitetail Institute mineral 30-06, or Maximizer mineral by Real World. Both low in salt and high in mineral content. Feeders I use a mixture of corn, protein pellets and alfalfa pellets. Feeders are set up on edges of existing food plots and next to mineral licks. I run three of each on our 140 acre's. I close licks and remove feeders right around Sept 1 each year. Are mineral licks and supplemental feeding or food plots necessary or help I can tell you that while many are complaining about not seeing deer or very few. I have no shortage of deer and have plenty of bucks running around. Plus I love doing it and enjoy viewing the deer year round.

I have a few bags of 30-06 in cold storage.... Time to break them out!
I was thinking of doing the home brew using Di-cal, and I have 2 buckets of Lucky Buck. Gotta check the ingredients for salt.

I used to use Lucky Buck but it is much higher in salt content. Whitetail Institute usually runs a special buy 1 bag get a bag free in the spring so I usually buy 2 get 2 free. Also buy a couple bags of Real Worlds mineral product maximizer. It has approx. 25% salt. Buddy of mine sells it so I get a few bags from him.

Between 64% and 65% salt in Lucky Buck. If you hadn't said anything, I would have never looked at the label.

On my property there are numerous large & small "WHITE" stones which are: Magnesium-calcium-carbonate (Dolomite). These will provide necessary minerals for Deer and other wildlife species. I've actually seen Deer lick these stones, especially during Spring/Summer. I still place a couple of Brown Mineral Blocks out, which are mostly Na-Cl (Table Salt) as other species like these better and the Deer use them also along with Dolomite.
