Next few months is a good time to do this. I got started yesterday on an area where I had planted a grove of oaks 10+ years ago. They are only about 10' apart so I am hinging every other one to give the remaining trees better growth opportunity.
This is one of the easiest and cheapest practices a land manager can do to improve habitat. Next spring you will have lots of new thick growth security cover, more browse and remaining trees will do better. Deer bed in it, feed in it, and it's also great cover for the small game. Only expense is a little chain saw fuel and your time.

Yeah we had some brutal winds last night. I'm betting a whole bunch of dead ash trees or their limbs are now on the ground all around the neighborhood.

I will be hinge cutting sometrees again this year. It is a good tool.
