Hi all, I told my wife I was buying a rifle if Hilary got elected and she made it impossible. Well trump got elected but she said we might as well buy a rifle anyways.
I'm looking for something I could use on an elk trip if I ever go, something I can get coyotes with, something I can shoot for fun, something that is legal for deer in Indiana although I only bow hunt (just in case I change my mind). Budget is around $400-$500 with scope. I know that is pretty limiting but there are a few options.
So it looks like the Ruger American and the Savage Axis in .308 are two of the more popular options. I can get a Savage with cheapo scope for about $300 on sale and I can get a Ruger with cheapo scope for $469. I'm not a huge fan of the Savage but am contemplating buying one for the low cost then adding better scope mounts, better scope and possibly different stock. If I get the Ruger I wouldn't have much room for anything additional.
So what do you guys think? Am I off base here, anything additional you would add?

The Savage XP Trophy Hunter comes with a pretty decent Nikon scope, and can be found for under $500. I recently purchased one in .308 and like it a lot.

I have not looked much into the Trophy Hunter, is it a step up from the Axis? Not necessarily saying the Axis isn't a good gun but have heard there are a lot of little things about it that just leave something to be desired.

I purchased the Ruger American 308 win 3 weeks ago and found a china scope for $45. I'm shooting 1.5" circle at 100 yards. The clip holds 4. Good gun for the price.

So I guess not too much of a cheapo scope.

For the price it seems like it is a good mix of quality where it needs it and skimping where they can to make the price point.

I took it to a friend that is a gun dealer for 38 years (retired police officer) and told me it's the best for that price market. He's the one that told me about the scope market. I forget the scope model (old age). I will look tonight and let you know. I like the rifle and a little better after the 1st deer with it.
I paid $299 for the gun and $45 for the scope. Everything just under $300.

I wouldn't be that dissatisfied with anything ruger or savage has some people are complainers and life just leaves them with something to be desired with everything. My whole muzzleloader setup cost me less than 150$ and I've killed deer with it. I'm sure some people wouldn't be happy. I've hunted for awhile with an old beat up 12gauge single shot that cost me $50. The biggest thing is how the gun feels to you.

Just about any of those $300 rifles will get the job done fine. I have a Mossberg 100 ATR that I use on my hunts out west, it shoots and functions just fine.
One lesson I had to learn the hard way (a couple of times, at that) is not to go cheap on the scope. You don't need to spend $1000 on one, but the basement priced scopes will not reliably hold zero on hard-recoiling rifles. I had issues with $75-$80 scopes on both a 12 gauge and a .30/06 that after a few years of use would no longer hold zero.

Lifetime warranty. You break it they buy it. I know lots of guys shooting vortex optics and ive never heard a complaint.

Yea, I spoke before I went back and read the description again. It was the Savage with the Bushnell scope, I forgot the American had the Vortex scope.

I like what Lawrence county hunter recommended. Mossberg Patriot= gorgeous gun! If I had the pick between savage and ruger I would get a Savage Axis 2 with Accu trigger, get that trigger adjusted to a nice crisp 3lb pull. I'd get a $200 vortex diamondback 50mm scope. Beautiful setup!!!!! But so is that Mossberg patriot with that beautiful wood stock
