Snow is good to have on the ground - when the leaves are off the trees and the ground is white, you can see deer moving through the woods a long way sway. couldnt have said it better. always enjoy the colder weather and snow.

While we're talking about snow, I have another question. Last season, I hunted in the snow, but the first day of it, I didn't see deer tracks anywhere. The second day I did.
Is there something about the first day of a snow front that would want them to stay down?

For the most part deer will bed down during a storm, be it rain or snow. Then move after, thats why you always hear to get to the woods after a rain.

Any weather that takes away all or some of deer senses (sight, smell, sound) they will bed down.

I like to hunt when it is snowing or raining if it is not windy. I'm more concerned of the wind verses precipitation. If it's raining very hard/lightning then I am out of there. I shot my 1st buck in a good steady rain and the buck on the left from my trio picture when it was snowing, there was 3" on the ground and it was walking behind me. I would have never seen it if it wasn't for a twig that he broke. It was one of those 30 degrees, no breeze wet snow falling days. The woods were quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. It is my #1 day of hunting memory.

I don't think I have seen more than a handful of deer move during a storm. I think deer freak out a little after a good snow event and stay bedded to conserve energy or at least don't travel far for a day. But then it is on and they will start browsing high browse heavy.

There's always an exception. The wide 8 I shot last year was on the windiest day of the season; I didn't expect to see anything. However, the wind always seems to die down in the evening. At least the wind was blowing in the right direction.
I guess they have to eat sometime.

If the weather, more specifically the wind, stays as projected, its the best possible and rare wind for the spot I plan on hinting saturday. Not often we have wind out of the west during deer season

I like to gun hunt during the beginning of a snow storm. I've seen a lot of deer moving then, looking to fill their bellies before the storm. Not so keen on bow hunting then, because I've had blood/tracks covered in the 1/2 hr wait after sticking one.
I don't like to archery hunt in the rain because of the blood trail possibly getting washed away.
If it's going to snow, I try like heck to get out at least an hour before and 2 hr after it starts. If you are in a tree stand, it's natural camouflage too - if you don't move you turn white just like everything else. I shot a 10 point behind the house here in the beginning of a storm. He is large enough to qualify for the muzzleloader Indiana record book. Late in the season, about 45 min into a lake effect snow storm. 4 bucks walked by in a group, 4,6,8, and finally the 10. 20 yd shot, they never knew I was in the tree stand. I probably had 2" of snow on me. They were more interested in finding acorns than anything in a tree.

According to the weatherman, tomorrow 10/1, should be dry, around 50° and light westerly wind. Thats SW Indiana around Evansville. Good luck to everyone in the morning. Enjoy.

I will be out rain or shine. I plan on deer hunting to around 9-11am, then squirrel hunting to about 1-2pm, then go fishing the rest of day. Rest at work on Monday! Good luck everyone.
