I have to agree, whats going to happen is seeing a deer track will be a rare thing if we keep killing does at these quotas. You can kill 10 deer here in vanderburgh county. A lot of these young fellas have never hunted when deer were scarce. I'm not saying were there yet but a disease or two goes through the herd and it can take years to recover.

how was this summer hard on deer?
In my area we have record crops in the fields and the woods. No droughts or ehd that i am aware of. In fact I see more deer this year than I have seen in a few years.
I dont put any stock in the outdoor writer's opinions. we could be 1st or last I will still hunt like I did last year.

What's crazy is actually you can kill more than 10. You can legally kill 10 (10 doe or 9 doe and 1 buck in reduction on top of that you can kill 8 more doe and 1 buck on your state tags if you wanted to purchase that many. So from my understanding you can take 19 deer in vanderburgh county. That's just insane. Not that I ever would take that many or even come close to attempting it but you are allowed to hunt with a state tag in reduction zones when it's a state season correct? Or can you only hunt reduction zone with reduction tag? I know right now has to be a reduction tag but can I fill a state tag in a reduction zone come October 1st. Guess that's a better way to put it.

Very little rain and record heat here. Ehd? Still a possibility, creek has run dry.

Let's say you harvest a buck in firearms (1). 2 does with archery tags (2 & 3)....you then can get up to 10 antlerless. I'm at 13...but will admit I basically only bow hunt so could be wrong. Either way I get it and agree most likely no need. However, a small percentage of hunters even harvest over 2...get above 4 and it is an extremely small minority.

None of the articles listed should garner much weight...people will latch on to the one that plays up their agenda and write off the others. See it all the time....doing so just makes folks look naive.

I have not looked but I thought vanderburgh was an 8 bonus antlerless county on your actual state tag. I know reduction zone and state are two different types of tags. You can take with the purchase of each reduction zone tag I think then if you limited out on your state and reduction you would be at 19 deer total. I could be wrong but that's my understanding. And your right either way it's crazy the thought of taking that many deer. I usually kill 2 deer a year and then my uncle takes one maybe two and I've taken a new hunter out the last few years and they have gotten luck enough to kill one each year. We hunt about 100 acres so we kill a lot for the size as a group but none of us take over two. I do have buddies that kill every deer they see which I don't understand, but they also eat all of it.

Regardless what the quota numbers are for each county, still taking to many does in the area I hunt. Maybe in your area your seeing lots of deer, if you are I'm jealous, cause I'm not here. Last year I hunted the Friday evening before gun season, I bet I heard at least 30 shotgun, rifle and pistol shots. Some were close within half mile. Remember this was bow season. This was not people sighting in their guns, these were shots just before dark probably half hour before dark. My point is these hunters were killing deer illegally that I never or other hunters never got the chance to hunt. I hunt 3 different counties and deer numbers that I'm seeing on camera's are down in all area's I hunt. Not trying to sound like chickenlittle but gentlemen we keep this pace of killing and 5, 10 years from now your grandson or son may not get the chance to kill a deer.

Who cares about writers?! Really. Opinions are like...Arse holes...everyone has one. People complain way to much. If "we" are number one, people complain it brings up hunting costs(leasing, outfitters, access, etc) but if "we" are low, then our government hates us and wants every deer dead! Just checkout facebook post by certain "herd managers" or forum posts, for that matter. I've yet to see the significant, sky is falling, herd declines. I spent the last year of my life driving to Bowling Green, kentucky 5 days a week down I65. Know where I see more deer? On the 15 miles I drive in Indiana!! And Kentucky is praised for its deer management! Oh and they allow ALL centerfire weapons, have Online/phone check in(for YEARS), and have less puplic ground than Indiana!
Conspiracy theorists amaze me. They can truly turn a mole hill into a mountain.

Me personally I wouldn't care if anyone said Indiana was the worst place to deer hunt in the world. Heck I'd prefer it that way so the out of state weekend warriors would stay out of our fine hunting lands.

I used to drive the other way and it seemed everyday was a driving nightmare. I do, but my work hours (5am-3pm) put me out of the way of the rush. I live in Independence and work in St. Bernard and I can get to work in about 20-22 minutes and get home in 30-35 minutes.

Glad to hear you beat the traffic. I live in Mack, Ohio (Just inside I-275/I-74) and drove to Florence. Most of the time I went around through Indiana. The company filed chapter 11 a couple years ago. Now I work in Blue Ash. Once: I crossed 3 rivers and traveled in 3 States (Great Miami, Miami Whitewater, and Ohio River/Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky) for work. Took me 35 minutes.

The secret is out now. We need to direct these out-of-state hunters to the high fences and leave the free-range deer to the locals.
