Out of my ten Dustan Chestnuts started from seed I have lost two so far. One grow to 4 inches then stopped and died. A bad nut. The other was up-rooted by a mole and it has brown leaves. I have two others that have green leaves, but has not grown any new leaves since the beginning. Not sure yet on those two. The other 6 are doing great and had new leaves and branches. I'm hoping the other two start getting new growth soon, so that 8 of 10 make it. I will take a picture of the best one.

Thanks for offer but I have 2 seedless in my backyard that I got 400 plus bags of pulp out of last year and I planted 100 this spring. I will gladly still let you have chestnuts though,

I never touched a chestnut before that I knew of until today. I saw a sign that said "free chestnuts" the other day so while the wife and I were out for a ride today we stopped just to see what a full size chestnut tree looked like.
There was three of them there together at least. THEY TAKE UP A LOT OF ROOM and they ARE HUGE! BUCKETS loads of nuts still on the tree, all over the ground. Picked one up and first thing I thought was it looked like a buckeye. Wife said no thought so guess that's it. I was wrong, but I can change.
One nut on the ground was popping open so I opened it and those are SWEET and LOTS of meat in them. I read last night on line they have about twice the caloric as most nuts. I can definitely see now why everything in the forest would go crazy for those things. Can't wait for mine to grow faster now. I may get two more when they go on sale again. Straight up legal to hunt over, no packing any thing around over and over every year. Got to be cheaper than feeding wild life year after year.
I may get too old to "hunt" some day but by then I'll never need to leave the porch with chestnuts, persimmons, pecans and acorns all in range.

Lowes had some good sales on fruit trees this year, I don't know if they're carrying any chestnuts right now.

Our RK had two full pallets of Chestnuts left yesterday. I'd watch for them to go half price at this point.
I picked up a full 5 gallon bucket of just nuts today. No hulls. Used my nut wizard, man that thing is handy. I've got them for picking up amo cases and bought enough to get the dealer discount and figured I'd just sell the rest as I run in to people who like the one I've got. I still have about 5-6 so today I traded two of them back in for some with the bigger bales for walnuts and shotgun shells.
I hadn't been using my medium size on on the chestnuts for 10 minutes yet and a guy came up and told me how much he had been wanting one of those for walnuts... well, it just so happens... Love it when a plan comes together. Now I have to back and get may be two for walnuts this time.

I made a foray in to eating chestnuts today. For 100 chestnuts picked up randomly on the ground, I'd hazard to guess at best 25 make it to the plate. The pot will be cut in half at inspection and again when peeling them after cooking, regardless baked or boiled. The boiled were NOT well received at all.
All seemed interested in eating them after tasting a raw one fresh peeled. 2/3 enjoyed fresh roasted ones. No one was interested in more than a bite of a boiled one. These were both just pure, baked or boiled and no spice additions tastings. Now I've also had a couple of the baked ones after they've cooled in the refrigerator. Unusual is the best description. Sort of a soft cushy cashew taste rather than the normal cashew crunch. The cashew reference is really just the best descriptor I can come up with and it is very very mild light taste.
A little salt makes a huge difference and the candy or other spiced up recipes may make a world of difference.
This seems interesting enough to try.
At this point I wouldn't plant Chestnut trees looking to make principal use of them for my own consumption.

Rural King in Columbus has 12 left but are NOT sale. $30 for a small tree is ridiculous. I agree that DNR should stay offering these.

In the scheme of nuts chestnuts truly do produce quite fast in comparison to nearly anything else and are desirable. Planted some 3 or 4 foot tall ones this past year...expect about 2020 possibly seeing some. Any oaks planted I expect to be at minimum 50 before seeing nuts unless I get into some hybrids or a few sawtooths.

None of my oaks are over 24 years old which include the White Oak has been producing for 8-10 years, so around 15 yrs old. The only that held out was the pin oak for some reason. It finally did this year. The red oaks are around 60 ft tall after 24 yrs. All the oaks in my place I planted or from seed. My wife called them pencil sticks at first. Now she can't believe how big they have gotten. About 3 years old picture of the smaller red oak, then white with leave, then black, and last one is the pin oak. The smallest tree

The acorns and nuts bring in the deer every year. My stand is in one of the trees I planted. Didn't think that far out when I planted it. Got lucky, it's in the right place.

Yeah I have no clue if I'll still own the 22 and change I bought and plan on planting more on in 15-25 years...but I don't want to be setting up a stand then wishing I had. The saying "When is the right time to plant an Oak? Last year..." is so so true.

I planted over 400 Chestnut seeds with the help of my cordless drill back in Sept. Got another big bag full of seeds in the Fridge till next spring now.
I planted 100 persimmon trees that I got from nursery and all but a few are still alive. That is the ones I remembered where I planted. Already ordered another 100 for next spring.

Man...how many acres you work on parrothead? I hope to add a plentiful amount of persimmons some day too. I have had a few folks tell me to plant them along edges as they do better around but not blocked by other trees...true?

Well I know most wont make it so I try to over do it with numbers. I planted them in fence rows and along briars to try and help protect them. The persimmons I planted along field edges.

I put 5 ft high fences around each chestnut. I planted 3 about 15 years ago and the deer eat then down to nothing.

Seems like persimmons always do best on south facing edges. I doubt being on an edge has any benefit, but they like full sun.
I never did see any deals on the chestnuts locally. I may have to pony up and pay full price next year.
