My woods got hit hard by the emerald ash bugs, so figured I may as well sell the dead & dying trees before they are too far gone. Loggers just mobilized equipment and will be taking about 180 trees off the property, most of which are ash. Should really thicken up the woods too by letting more light in, plus all of the tops laying around. Sounds like it's only going to take about a week.

180 trees ought to bring in some $$$. Our Club had it done a few years back and I think we were in the 120's for trees.

My land owner pulled his dead ones out with his bobcat for firewood, but he only has 10ac woods. He was selling one big one though.
He had a big problem with his poplar trees.

I've thought about doing a select cut to open things up, but I don't have much worth anything.
Habitat work is something I struggle with. Just don't know what I'm doing.

The QDMA "Quality Deer management Association" has a wealth of reading material and resources. Ton's of good articles on their website regarding habitat and food plots. Pretty cheap to join also, and you will get a monthly magazine packed with information.

Swetz, just start digesting stuff. Seek stuff from somewhat local or experience fellas in our area like: Jake Ehlinger (Michigan) his site is HabitatSolutions360 Jim Brauker (Michigan) his site is extremedeerhabitat Both of these guys I consider friends and like me believe propper hinging (especially Jim) is one of the most useful things in habitat formations...Jim like I believe a chainsaw (even handsaw) are worth more than any other implement. Other guys: Jeff Sturgis (wisconsin...but has experience in our area) his site is whitetailhabitatsolutions Grant Woods growingdeertv There are many, many, many others worth observing at the very least when it comes to habitat.

So what is that new one that's coming through. Heard it was in Chicago and Cincy. I think they mention popular and maple and some other trees. Don't hold me to that I couldn't catch it all. Anyone know about those bugs.

If you are considering timbering your land I would HIGHLY recommend that you contact the Indiana Department of Forestry and get contact number's for a licensed timber consultant. He will mark trees for sale according to your goals and bid your timber out to reputable, licensed loggers only... Yes they charge a small fee % of timber cut but you avoid being ripped off by dishonest loggers (A lot out there). They are very knowledgeable about current pricing and quality as well as habitat improvement and invasive insects.. I would not log my property without getting a licensed timber consultant's advice....

Timber guy just told me a couple days ago that White Oak and Walnut is where the money is right now. Other wise timber is down. I know ash is cheap because there is so much of it standing dead.

my property was logged 3 years ago, and it has changed the woods so much. it continually gets thicker every year. the first year is tough because tops are everywhere and can change deer patterns. after the first year, i began seeing more wildlife because the woods really thickened up. rabbits, squirrels, bobcats, deer, etc. logging your property is really good for the woods.
