This is a SE Oklahoma,McCurtain county buck. Now for all the folks that havn't been outta state to chase whitetails...this is one place to leave OFF that list of places to go.While living just out of Idabel I met a game and fish fella that had been there for quite a good bit.Kenny had told me that the odds of taking a mature buck were as slim as it gets. The reason being is of all the die hard poachers. If the month had an R in it they were hunting and they pronounced JULY.....JURLY!Kenny had done work in and resided in some other "bad" areas but nothing quite as bad as SE Ok..
Now,I have told you that to tell you 'bout my hunt.Pecan farms are good buisness along with river bottom row crops in the rich soil along the rivers.Small pockets of timber, fence rows, drainage ditches and mosquitoe chocked swamps are the choices. It is easy to get access and you will get some chuckles if you pull out archery equipment before you hunt.My choice of strategy was hunting the mile long fence rows and finding terrain breaks where the deer would use a depression to cross open ground and pick up the fence row.Well if you take this approach make sure you are toting good optics and have enough patience too watch the leaves turn brown.
This particular deer was taken on one of the setups mentioned earlier. He almost caught be nappin'...that's seems to happen alot with whitetails. He had a cluster of scrapes and rubs on this particular fenceline that helped in his demise. This was an up close and personal shot, the hedge tree serving as a stand was thick with heavy branches and cover but short on height...kinda like me..lol. So the combination of the Easton XX78 2115 Super Slams/Muzzy 100 out of my 61# Hoyt Tenacity did the trick at point blank range.Very nice 5x4 that was 4.5 yr old and had several .22 and shotgun pellets through out his body. And by the way,I almost forgot to say that this deer was taken in late November of my SECOND season in SE OKLAHOMA! Patience,Planning and Persistence.
