Since we have been discussing our dogs I want to ad this comment. Today after 13 years of fetching my ducks, geese, pheasants, doves and everything I threw for her to fetch I put down my sweet BELLA.
Bella was a 13 year old female lab that I got as a puppy, she was a great retriever a defender of our home and the best companion my wife and I and our grand kids could ever have.
Bella's hips went out last fall so we had to go slow with her, I had to help her up the stairs with a belly sling but she never complained. Two days ago she let me know it was time and so today I put Bella to sleep. I buried her along a tree line next to our marsh a place her and I would would sit and watch for ducks in the fall.
RIP BELLA.

Very sorry to hear. Always hard to hear that as it brings up memories of pets past. Your memories of her and the fun you had together will last forever.

That is the biggest problem with dogs. They just are not around long enough. At least you can visit her.

I know it was tough, and she'll be missed. They become part of the family.

Sorry to hear about your loss. But you did the last honorable thing for her. You made sure she didn't spend her last days, months or year in pain. I understand your pain. In October we lost one of our trail horses. R.I.P

If I can offer some advise for those who will at some time in their life need to put down a long time family pet/hunting buddy that advise would be to be there when they pass and if at all possible bring them home and bury them there.
Digging a grave can help clear your mind.

Digging a grave can helps clear your mind. I agree with this. In the corner of our yard is a "pet cemetary". We have one dog and five cats buried there. We had our Lab Andy cremated and buried the urn. Every time I cut the grass and pass over their graves I say "Hi boys"...

It's hard when a dog is around so long you can't imagine them not being there. Sorry.

A Dog's Prayer.
If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle cannot be won. You will be sad, I understand; Don't let your grief then stay your hand For this day more than all the rest Your love for me must stand the test We've had so many happy years What is to come can hold no fears, You'd not want me to suffer so, The time has come please let me go. Take me where my need they'll tend And please stay with me until the end, Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see, The kindness that you did for me Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved. Please do not grieve, it must be you Who has this painful thing to do, We've been so close, we two, these years, Don't let your heart hold back its tears.
Robin Hooper, Veterinary Surgeon.
