I've had good luck using 4 ought steel wool and machine oil. Depends on the bluing some won't take as much scrubbing as others. Go slow and check.

I have copper gauze I'm going to try it with I'll have to let one rust up real good

I've had good luck using 4 ought steel wool and machine oil. Depends on the bluing some won't take as much scrubbing as others. Go slow and check. I've used phosphoric acid to remove old bluing and rust + #0000 steel wool. Works fine BUT phosphoric acid is very toxic & dangerous!!
