Back in 2003 I continued my second bow season ever with already killed a buck and doe in previous years with a muzzleloader. I remember passing up a kind of decent eight point that was only ten yards from me that year because I hoped something bigger would come along. Well, the opening day of shotgun season came it I drove my dad’s four wheeler out to a blind that was very old and didn’t hold much promise but all the other spots were taken by my dad’s hunting buddies. So I got there real early and sat for about an hour and a half before daylight and it was raining, my blind was leaking, and the bench fell off the wall so I was kind of in a hunched position. I didn’t see anything until about eight thirty I saw two does come across the field and I was ready to put some meat in the freezer so I put my gun on them and waited for them to come in. Before they got to me they went a different way than I expected and ran on the other corner of the woods. But I kept my Knight Disc Magnum on that corner just incase they decided to come around for some strange reason and they did! So as I shouldered my gun I noticed there were three deer this time but did not think much about it so I looked through the scope to determine which one was the biggest and when I got to the third one to judge it I realized I was being starred down by an absolute brute!!! I already had the hammer safety off so before I even had time to start shaking I did a quick flip off of the safety, steadied the shot and let the smoke pour out! When the smoke cleared all I saw was the two does run into the woods but no sign of the buck. So I radioed to my dad’s friend across the field and he said he could barely understand me because I voice was trembling so bad! Anyways I waited about a half hour and just couldn’t wait any longer so I went out to look for blood. When I got out the Does were standing just inside the woods and then they bolted so I decided I must have hit the buck because otherwise they would have stayed together. I didn’t find any blood until a guy came and helped me find it followed his tracks and found just a few chunks of meaty blood and then a bush straight behind where the buck would have been had some spray in it…..but no trail at all. So we started walking the woods just thirty feet apart back and forth to see if he bedded up and died somewhere but we never found anything….not even fresh tracks of him leaving the woods, only the Does. So were started searching the cornfield when another guy was coming over to help us was driving and radioed to me and said my deer is laying just 100 yards off the road and he can see big antlers from his truck!!!! By the time Gizmo and I made it back to his truck and my four-wheeler, there were at least six vehicles swarmed around it to see the big buck that nobody knew about and I was there to claim it! So two hours after the shot I finally got my hands on that trophy and the only reason we can figure out that he made it that far was the his front half was angled towards me and I didn’t realize that and I only got one lung but it took out a bunch of stuff also and he was bleeding internally. So I can’t paint a pretty picture of how I watched this buck for three years and had trail am pictured and all that jazz on this buck because I just got lucky on him. I won’t be afraid to admit it! I got him scored yesterday and he grossed 149 2/8 and netted 134 4/8. Not too bad but I’m working on getting a bigger one!
