By the way we are currently looking to get about 7 more campers for Karl E. Kelley Camp in June. Those currently in 5th or 6th grade wanting to attend need to complete the online application at www.icoo.com/youthcamp.php , list Central Indiana PF #642 as Sponsoring Association, and email a copy of the application to kentburget@safetymanagementgroup.com Jack

We have sent 10-13 campers each year for past 5-8 years and quite a few before that. This is one of our main projects each year. Some of the kids we originally sent have become councelers and even applied for Conservation Officer school. First come, first served.

This is a GREAT camp. Our son attended 2 years ago. It is amazing how well run and organized it is with so many kids involved. My nephew is signed up to attend this year.

As one who has been a volunteer for Range Day at the camp for a number of years now, and sponsor a deserving kid who would other wise never have the chance, I can attest to the how good the camp is. The only disappointment I've ever seen in all those years is that they cannot come back again and again. Last year the kids fired over 22,000 rounds of .22LR on the pistol and rifle range.

A generous member has said that he will donate some money towards a "scholarship" for a deserving youngster who does not have the funds to go.
I think that is GREAT!
If anyone knows of such a youth I think we can do a collection right here and hopefully cover all the costs.
Please let me know and we will start a donation collection for the youngster..
Thanks!

What kind of volunteer help do they need? Since this camp is kind of almost in my backyard I feel like I should helping somehow...I'll be seeing ICO Tholen tonight at our local NWTF chapter banquet (which by the way donates $$ to this camp). He is always busy but I'll put out feelers with him also to see if there's anything I can do to assist.

Below is a memorial page for one of the kids we sent to camp last and who passed away suddenly last fall. His parents said the camp was greatest event of his short life. The funds from his gofundme page will be used to fund an annual scholarship to send one student each year from DJ's middle school to the Indiana Conservation Officer Organization's Karl E. Kelley Camp - which DJ attended in June of 2015. Anyone with extra cash feel free to donate. www.gofundme.com/djpreece

A local LEO who works a lot around schools is the one who picks a kid for me. He hits up counselors, teachers, etc., to find a kid who just needs to get out of an environment that isn't just what it should be. Was out at his house tonight and he will have another one for me to sponsor. He said he saw last years kid a couple of weeks ago and said the camp was great, he had the best time he had in years, and to thank whoever it was that made it possible for him to go. As a side note, the food is a lot better than some of them get at home. I stated years ago that it was not necessary for the kid to know where the money came from just that he or she is deserving.

Woody,
Are there any qualifications for the sponsorship? My 5th grade son would love a chance to attend such a camp. It would sure lighten the load to have part or all of the $350 entry covered....
Let Me Know,

I think the camp is full. I know all our spots (15) are taken). Might contact www.icoo.com/youthcamp.php and see if they have any room or scholarships left. We started our search for kids 6 weeks ago and filled our quota within a week. The good news if he can't get in this year he should still qualify for next year. Make sure they apply starting in January. Jack

www.icoo.com/youthcamp.php Age bracket is completion of the fifth or sixth grade [depending on birth date] which covers 10-12 years old. Some of the girls are so tiny at 10, and the some of the boys look like they could carry cement blocks all day long. Read my above post as to how a kid that I pay for meets my criteria. I started doing this after asking a lot of questions about the background of the campers. Some come from dirt poor families, and others come from the upper crust. Here is last years kid that I sponsored [scholarship]. photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipM5fvsJ2mA8LIK0kysEaRp8v6tbyzDvndqHt8c He scored 100% on his Hunter Education test. This one is a young lady who took several minutes of talking before she would even pick up a handgun. Once she go onto it, she couldn't shoot enough. photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNgzbcIeTZvDBPv4Gd4uLd3n3qwqxTL2ZhnftA

Scholarship in our case (Pheasants Forever)means that we pay for the kid to go to the camp ($350 each). The only criteria we have is that the kids must meet the camp qualification. We don't have an income range for them. Often our guys pay for their own kid to go to camp while helping sponsor less fortunate ones to go for free. If you go to the camp website you can see it is run almost like a military boot camp and lots of kids learn how to do push ups and march. Nothing drastic just a taste of disipline which many kids badly need. If they pass the tests they receive their Hunters Ed and Boaters Ed certificates.
We have had kids come back years later and volunteer as counselers. We have even had one go to the Marines and is trying to become a Conservation Officer now. Sadly we even had one graduate last year and pass away shortly after the camp. His parents described the camp experience as the greatest experience of his short life.

If anyone involved may be able to message me about ways to help out and volunteer, that would be incredibly appreciated. Wanting to start my own non-profit later in life and would love to see how such a successful one currently operates and help out!
