Dusty, I am also planting 1.5ac of "Power Plant". I'm going to cut existing growth low and then spray it to kill it off. Then I will disk it, fertilize and disk again at 2". Then I'll seed it and use a real drag harrow to cover up. I'm buying a disk, 8' wide harrow and boom sprayer. I will be more than happy to help you in anyway that I can. What part of the state do you live in? I'm up in the Northeast. About half hour from Michigan and about 10 minutes from Ohio. It was really nice today so I was out in the yard and talked to a neighbor that has 40 acres behind me. Sounds like he has a few tools at his disposal so between some of his and my tractor we should be able to get both our properties ready this year! There is a company that I've worked with in the past for work called A&L Great Lakes and they do soil samples. I've already talked with a guy there who is going to do my samples and really step me through what fertilizer, where to get it and how to best apply it and when. Getting pretty excited about getting this going.

I still have to find someone around me with a little tractor or bigger ATV to do mine. I wish I could rent one somewhere, but haven't found one yet. It is exciting! ...and fun too. Good luck and take photos along the way so we can see them.

Yea you do the same. If you lived closer I would tell you we can swap and use my tractor and your planter.
Have you planted the power plot before?

Those are pretty sweet. Still not exactly giving them away ha. I know. That's what has been stopping me from getting one.

I would love to create some sort of budget food plot tool for guys that are doing up to an acre without tractors or atvs. I'm lucky enough to have a big tractor at my disposal but up until this year I just had a mower and trimmer. To start with nothing and get to the point of being able to plant a food plot is too many thousands of dollars to think about...

So now for a different question: are deer specific seeds worth it? Is it better to buy whitetail institute, eagle seed, etc vs buying an ag seed?

This will be my first year for power plant, but I did find it at Sportsman's Guide a little cheaper. The only cheap seed that I've bought and used was something with buckwheat in it, and my deer liked it. I'm hearing that some plants may take the deer a while to like them. I don't know, but know that my deer never did go crazy over my turnips. However, some deer love them. I'm not planting turnips again, but they did like the greens. This year, I'm going with some taller plants around the treeless edges of my plot to help them feel more secure. Don't know that it will help, but I'm going to find out. I don't mind trying different plants to see what my deer will do back flips over. I am planting chufa this year for turkey, maybe the deer will like them too. I'm not buying the Whitetail brand; instead I'll get the Turkey Gold Chufa from Outdoor Deal Hound. It's cheaper and hoping it will be good enough.

So now for a different question: are deer specific seeds worth it? Is it better to buy whitetail institute, eagle seed, etc vs buying an ag seed? I'm not sold on deer specific seeds being better. BUT, in some areas, are the deer specific seeds more available? I'd say yes, via the internet. I was told some blends/varieties are deer company specific. For instance, last Fall I had good results with Tall Tine Tubers. I can't find a "generic" equivalent to plant this year. Also, sometimes trying to find small quantities of seeds may be difficult. If someone can find indeterminate soybean seeds in 10# or 20# packages, I'd sure like to know where.....

The only thing that seems to be really appetizing about deer specific is they are claiming to handle browse pressure a lot better. I've not used standard seed before but they supposedly aren't able to rebound as well.

I like research and data, and this is why I like Whitetail Institute. However, it's all what your deer like.
I did take some more food down today, and it looks like they've been eating more turnips. They may like them next year, but IF I plant any, I won't plant as many.

Most of those "buck on the bag" food plot mixes are a rip off. Read the white tag on these bags, you might only be getting 3# of seed in a 5# bag.
