Decided yesterday if the snow fell I was going to go to my flooded field and see if the geese that were there would return. When I got up the snow was flying pretty good. So I wasn't in a big hurry to get out there. Well that was a mistake because they were all ready there. Three of them sitting in it. Went inside and got dressed up in my all white camo and when I got back out there were 15 geese sitting on the flooded field. <img src="//images.proboards.com/v5/smiley/superangry.png" alt=" " class="smile" contenteditable="false" text=" " Had to take the long way around to get close to them without them seeing me. The snow and my white camo worked great ,I was able to get within 50 yards of them without getting nervous. But I couldn’t get any closer, so I waited for them to get closer to me but that didn’t happen. I just watched the silly antics that they do and watched flock after flock of geese coming in right over where I was supposed to be in the morning. Wind was out of the north west and they were coming in pretty slow with the wind gusts. They were almost hoovering ,the wind was blowing so hard. Finally a big flock came in and was hoovering about 40 yards from where I was and couldn’t take it any more. I let them have it, first one fell and they flared big time and with the wind blowing they were 50 yards away after the first shot. I’m going to have to start using heavy shot because the steel just doesn’t pattern well at 40 yards. I went and grabbed my one lone goose and quickly got to my normal shooting spot in hopes some would come back or another flock would come in. The mate to the one I shot did return but landed about 60 yards from me and sat down and wouldn’t move, even when I used my goose call it didn’t care. Got up and tried to get a hit one it while it was sitting but no luck. I will try tomarrow morning and I will be early this time. Going to take my coyote caller with and give a few calls before the geese start flying. Maybe I can get a goose and a yote. Oh and of course the squirrels were all over the place yesterday too.

Where I hunt the coyotes, geese fly over my head pretty low. I know my 30" Beretta with High Flyer extension choke will reach them; however, they are not in a late season zone. I'll get them next year.

"and watched flock after flock of geese coming in right over where I was supposed to be in the morning"
Oh yeah, that works for any kind of hunting - been there more than once during deer season.

Well it wouldn't have mattered, nothing today except 2 mallards came into the open spot in the ice. No crows ,geese, yotes or squirrels were moving today. But it was nice to get out!

I went to the pond where the geese were supposed to be and nobody was home. I was able to see it from the car, so I never even got out of the car!

My husband has the full weekend off this week. We are discussing how hardcore we want to be, currently both our waders have slow leaks in them and it's supposed to be 16 degrees for the high, lol.

Can you find the leak and slap a patch in it? No, we haven't been able to pinpoint them yet, lol. His is worse than mine, down near the knee, mine at least is in the butt crack (also one of the absolute worst to try and patch), so for the most part I'm safe unless I forget and squat down in the water to hide, lol. I'm waiting for rodgers waders to come back in stock, we are both due for new pairs.

Hehe, good point. The other question we are asking is, do we want to bust ice if we don't see any birds around? LOL

As for busting ice, that's up to you. Personally? I'd scout for a field where they are loafing/eating and set up there early in the morning on the "X". I haven't seen very many flying the past few days, but then again I've tried to stay in the office as much as possible due to the temps.

Speaking of Coyotes I was baking a raspberry pie and making deer tacos when I looked out the window I saw 2 coyotes trotting through my neighbors field, this was right at sunset tonite.
I have experienced some very good goose hunting during this February season, starting Tuesday the geese began flying out at approx. 10:00 am and spending their days sitting in open fields. I would predict this pattern to continue through the weekend with this forecast for bitter cold temps. If you know where they are roosting on open water or loafing during the day that would be your best bet for the last few days. Now is the time to bust the roost!
