They've obviously screwed up the list of cartridges. There's no cartridge designated ".243", and the same goes for the others listed. My guess is they will correct these to be specific about which cartridges are legal, such as 243 Winchester, 30/30 Winchester, 30-06 Springfield, etc. I would rather they just legalized any CF rifle cartridge fires a projectile 0.222" and larger like many states allow.

For those following this thread and not the other one, this passed the House today. On to the Senate...

Looks like HB 1231 is up for vote in the Senate sometime tomorrow afternoon. Session starts at 1:30 PM. Scroll down the page a little at the following link: Indiana General Assembly, 2016 Session

So now it's off to the Guv to sign it? No other changes?

So now it's off to the Guv to sign it? No other changes? Correct. It's possible that the printed bill may add suffixes to the calibers, otherwise the DNR will have to in the regs.

For me, if I do any hunting during the firearms season, I most likely will still use the Savage Muzzleloader. BUT, it will be interesting to see what the final wording is. Than and only then can I determine what I will be using. Most places that I hunt, the Savage is more than enough.

Depending on how they word it. Maybe we could use a different firearm every day of the season. Between shotgun, muzzle loader handguns, and rifles. I might just do that.

Based upon the wording could one presume that 300 blackout might be used?

Also posted in thread under Deer Hunting:
According to a conversation today with an unnamed “inside” source, House Bill 1231 (as passed by both the House and Senate this week) will likely undergo at least one technical correction per proper Indiana General Assembly rules. That technical correction will “nail down” the meaning of the 5 cartridges noted in the bill (.243, .30-30, .300, .30-06, and .308). It is my understanding that the correction will be:
.243 Winchester .30-30 Winchester .300 Winchester Magnum .30-06 Springfield .308 Winchester
This technical correction would make the resulting bill (and law, if the Governor signs it) much more easily understood by all concerned, whether they like the bill or not. I do not know if there are any more technical corrections being considered.

IMHO, I think the arguments against HPR is silly. I can currently use my Thompson Center Encore pistol in .243 or 30-06 caliber to legally take a deer in Indiana. A HPR will only make me more accurate. That is a big plus. I have no desire to hunt with a AR-15 or AK-47, but if I did, I would not be opposed to a 5 round limit on magazine capacity while hunting. I sometimes hunt a Does with my 10 shot Marlin 1895 LAR but only load 4 or 5 cartridges. I know many novice hunters feel the need to load up with all the ammo they can carry. Therefore, I think a ammo capacity limit would be prudent. I'm all for anything that will bring more hunters to the field and I think HPR's will help.

So now that it passed both the House and the Senate, I assume that it will have some small tweaks done to it without having it be read and passed again (like adding the full cartridge name and not just a bullet diameter).
If that is the case, how long does the governor have to sign it once it reaches his desk? If he doesn't sign it does it die?

My guess is that it's already on the governor's desk. He has a week to sign it, and if he does not, it automatically becomes law on the 8th day.

Its veto proof anyway isnt it? I don't know the specifics of vetoes, but I do know that Governor Pence doesn't have much propensity to veto anything. It was signed by both the Speaker and President Pro Tempore last Thursday, so it's only a matter of time until he signs it.

Thanks guys!! I suppose it's just a waiting game to see what the final wording will be then? (to see if the specific calibers are listed and not bullet diameters?) Clicking on the "latest version" of it just shows bullet diameters.
