greetings.
Stuart and i had another fantastic weekend at Derby in the midlands shooting red leg partridge and pheasants.
Stuart drove us down on the Thursaday( he says i drive like an old man lol) the english traffic was as bad as ever but we got to my friends house and had dinner of pheasant pie boiled new patatoes etc what a feast for a widowed man. lol.
I was going to take Stuart's webley twelve bore that i gave him, and my sixteen bore for myself, i had them all laid out then i thought for safety sake as we were sharing a peg i would take the mcnab 28 bore.
So that was our guns for the weekend.
If anyone does not know it is highly dangerous to take a twelve and especially a twenty bore together, a twenty bore shell can go into a twelve bore cone jam there and another twelve shell can get in the chamber and go off the consequenses are deadly.
And it is very easily done when birds are streaming over you and one is trying to get loaded as fast as possible.
So on Friday we went to a famous clay ground for a laugh i was the first lamb to the slaughter as usual so i got the 28 bore out the sun was in our eyes but i connected with one or two.
Then it was stuarts turn as he loaded his twelve he says dad you have brought 16 bore shells, one had jammed in the cone, not to worry i dropped a 28 shell in from the other end and knocked it back out, and he borrowed a few shells from out friend until we got back to the tea room were we bought some twelve bore cartridges.
(see how easy it was done)
The high tower was a laugh the two twelve bores could not touch them but the little 28 dusted two of them, lol.
The forecast for Saturday was bad and as promised it rained all day but that did not matter one bit to us we had a fantastic time, Stuart shot three drives and i shot the other three, and if anyone tells you you are undergunned shooting partridge and pheasants english style with a 28 bore please laugh at them.
I was sort of suprised at the little gun with 21grm of six shot, the first pheasant of the day dropped, was a screaming high bird the little 28 just stopped it dead in the air.
The 28 has now got the nickname from the rest of the team as puff puff, it puffs as it goes off and there is a puff of feathers as it hits, and it killed everything stone dead.
Again i was so proud the way Stuart presented himself and he has been asked to join the team full time, that is somethng special to me. And he has accepted.
He has just started shooting driven game, it is an art and so different to clays and shooting game going away, Stuart is ok but he willalso improve a lot, the more game he see's coming screaming towards him with its tail blown in front of its head by a following wind. the easier he will judge the lead neadedto connect.
We stopped for elevenses which was sausage rolls etc etc etc, the ladies take great pride in making the snacks and one eats like a king.
The team of ten guns ended up with 86 partridge and 47 pheasants.
We then retired to the gun room for massive dinner a bit of banter, leg pulling and congratulations on some good shots and a drink of port or wine for those that were not driving.
With the ladies that were present there were sixteen of us for dinner, oh what fun.
Sorry no pictures it was just that wet and busy, but i assure you we all had tweeds, shirts and ties on and the ladies were appropriatly dressed as well.
That my friends is my idea of paradise, driven game shooting with a bunch of friends and there partners.
regards
Billy.
