Hi everyone. Just curious does anyone know of any populations of feral hogs in indiana or are there just pockets if any at all. I read an article probably about 6 months ago, and for some reason just popped into my head about a pocket of ferrell hogs down around evansville.
Don't know if there is any truth to that or not, and if someone does know of a population/pocket of them where at and how many if you have that information. Thanks a bunch and god bless

There are hogs. Those that know where they are tend to be tight-lipped about it for various reasons; the least of which is mostly because the ones that are out there are pretty much all on private property.

I think it would be nice to know that way I know that if I should be worried about some coming onto my property in the near future. I own some land in southern knox county that I use primarily for hunting and fishing and I didn't know if there might be some in the immediate area. I hope there aren't as I haven't seen any signs of them. I was curious is all if anyone knew where they might be and if I need to start worrying is all. Thanks for the replies.

I don't believe there are any around Evansville. I've heard of a small population on old strip ground in Warrick County.

The hogs in Lawrence/Jackson county weren't just rumors........unfortunately I think I've lost my hunting area there when the property owners' wife passed last year suddenly from a quick and aggressive cancer He's just not been in the mood to do much hunting which is totally understandable.

Draw a square on a map: Bedford to Brownstown to Salem to Mitchell back to Bedford. There are a few thousand in that area, have been there for around 25 years now. Very difficult to get permission to hunt them though.

Don't know.. wouldn't be surprised if they at least passed through the portions near the river, but it's illegal to hunt hogs on public ground in Indiana.

Very difficult to get permission to hunt them though. Why is that the case? You would think that the land owner would want nothing to do with them except for maybe the bacon on the stove in the morning. My fear of it is that in 20-30 years this state will start to look like texas in the aspect that there are far to many hogs for the hunters to deal with.

I've talked to several CO's about that area, just curious as background of the hogs, how many etc. As far as getting to hunt in that area, all of them agreed it was previous "slob hunters".

Don't know.. wouldn't be surprised if they at least passed through the portions near the river, but it's illegal to hunt hogs on public ground in Indiana. Might need to check on that. From the Page 7 of Hunting and Trapping Guide (Wild Pigs section), "A person can take a wild hog at anytime without a permit from the DNR. Permission mus be obtained from the landowner." It doesn't say anywhere in the section you can't hunt them on public land; however, maybe the quuoted second line is what they use to dissuade hog hunting on public land. The very next section is "DNR Property Rules", which states, "DNR properties sometimes have special rules not included in this book. Call the property you plan to hunt for details."

312 IAC 9-3-18.6 Wild hogs
(d) Notwithstanding subsection (c), an individual may take a wild hog only as follows: (1) A resident landowner or other individual who has written permission from the landowner may take a wild hog on that land at any time without a permit. (2) With a nuisance wild animal control permit issued under 312 IAC 9-10-11. Indiana Administrative Code Page 35 FISH AND WILDLIFE (3) With a scientific purposes license issued under 312 IAC 9-10-6.
I have heard this explained by DNR and USDA Biologists at informational meetings I have attended that the only way you can legally hunt hogs in Indiana without a special permit is on private property with permission from the landowner. I would be sure and obtain express permission from any public land property manager prior to going out looking for hogs just to CYA. Seems the DNR wants to make it as difficult as possible to hunt hogs in Indiana.

We do some work for Peabody off Barron Fork road and below the Ebenezzer Church in that area that had some old pig traps. They looked like huge box traps the same kind used to catch rabbits in only much, much larger. They were pretty well rotted away. That is why the Peabody Lynnville mine is called Wild Boar Mine. Those pigs were killed out many years ago I'm pretty sure

Which is the day before it disappeared
