So I just moved back to Indiana following a 12 year hiatus living in the western Chicago burbs. Since losing my hard earned private in a 2006 divorce, I am relegated to public. I'm quite an experienced hunter and after scouting & bow hunting Kingsbury, JP bow only, Kankakee & Winamac WA's, quickly surmised the buck quality had noticeably regressed from back in the 90's. No doubt all the gun hunters shifting to a 3 month crossgun season didn't help. But add that to 16 gun rut days, and the writing is on the wall. As I have an Illinois LL & Iowa points, I determined I would never waste another November on Indiana public. As I live only 20 minutes from Kingsbury, I drive by there often and notice how many of the hunters there are really young guys in their 20's. It seems to be the culture there to use these ladder stands with built on wheels for moving around. I laugh when I see these because I don't notice them anywhere else. I myself use Lone Wolf climbers and move daily, totally portable. I can't imagine planting myself in the same ladder stand every day. They aren't very high off the ground either. I think they are there more to reserve their spot, than actually hunt. I routinely hunt at 25-30'. Anyway it's a forest of these ladder stands with wheels at KB and I just gotta wonder if these young guys have ever been on a quality mature buck hunt in their lives. If they are even aware of how bad KB is, or if they think that is just normal. I just thank god I bought that IL LL back in 2006, days before the state stopped selling them. I had a great hunt this year on IL public before getting Covid November 9th. Season ended promptly, but I'll be back next year and beyond. Wow what a narrow escape getting that LL! Has turned out to be a real life saver. The lack of gun rut days is a true game changer.

Another sign I got was before Covid I stopped in at the KB HQ building and the CO’s encouraged me it was a great property to shoot does! When I asked how bad the crossgun hunting was they told me even after ten years the shift of gun hunters shifting to xgun was still in progress. More every year since the H/C requirement was lifted. I believe the “archery” harvest exceeded the firearm this year. Well, all that pressure is gonna put a real hurt on your buck quality. That’s why I’m out. Will pack my bags and head to Illinois or Iowa where I’m familiar with some public that still holds mature bucks.

ZIM: If you work hard at learning a property you will be successful. I know of a man that hunts a certain State owned property in the general area you mentioned and he without fail takes a buck almost every year and sometimes it's one of the bigger bucks taken from that property. This guy is the kind of guy that is camped out the night before the day you can begin hanging your stands and at 12:00 am he is in the woods with a head lamp hanging stands. That is how come he is successful.

Do not criticize how others choose to hunt. You will find it is not well received here.

You lost my interest at crossgun. That was enough for me to quit reading.

This guy is the kind of guy that is camped out the night before the day you can begin hanging your stands and at 12:00 am he is in the woods with a head lamp hanging stands. That is how come he is successful. Uhhh, ya no. I have quite a lot of experience. Have hunted 16 states over the last 30 years. This includes 5 in the Midwest. Almost all with vertical archery gear. Have put more than my share in P&Y. I'm not concerned with "taking a buck". I pass on tons of bucks every year because I won't shoot anything below ~140". I'll take a doe before I drop a <130" anymore. I exclusively hunt public, although I've been invited to hunt some slammer private. But I rarely hunt state land because that's almost always in the state regulation booklets. And I certainly don't hunt any place where there's any hunters hanging stands, much less at 12:00 am! LOL I work hard, but in a different way than you describe. My hard work is scouting for properties with major barriers to entry. Requiring a boat most recently. KB has some marshes, but they are not very big. And with pressure like they get, 99% of the mature bucks are nocturnal 5 days into October anyway. Been there done that. JP is better, I passed bucks almost every day there where I hunted, but all pencil thin 8 points. After you've hunted public in Iowa many times, you are not interested in wasting a November passing dinks all day to MAYBE get one look at a shooter in three weeks. Even if I were to drop him, I would not call that a great season. The public I hunted last year I passed on 130" bucks almost every single day. I'm just not interested in hunting anywhere that allows stands to be left up overnight, much less walking past 4 or 5 in 200 yards like I did at Kingsbury. LOL That type of "hunting" is in a totally different stratosphere.

Hello all, I am moving to Valparaiso next month to start an internship with arcelormittal over the next year and will be living with my uncle. He pretty much lives right in dt valpo. Is there anyone that lives up here and is experienced with the area, as in where to go to do some good fishing AND deer, rabbit, squirrel, and turkey hunting. I just turned 25 and have lived in Hamilton County for 22 years now so this will be a big move for me. If anyone is ever looking for someone to do some of these things with, I am more than happy to. I won't know anyone in the area, but luckily I have a good friend that lives in Rensselaer right off 49 so his place is a straight shot. I saw some public lands not too far like Aukiki, Jasper-Pulaski and a couple others. Any tips on where to go is much appreciated. Thanks, Matthew BTW - The range at JP is 200 yards max these days. I grew up in Valpo and used to own some slammer timber/swamp there. I think JP is probably your best bet and closest for overall public shooting & hunting. But as mentioned Winamac & Kankakee are also decent. I live by Kingsbury and would take a flyer on that due to gross over pressure. None of these properties offer trophy deer hunting, but all have excellent turkey hunting. You should take advantage of that. One bird per hunter/season very conservative = great hunting.
