I have used scents very minimally in the past and haven't used any this year. Was just curious to what you guys use during the rut in order to try to draw the big ones in? I know a lot of guys use estrus but what kind? I've already got my buck but am doing everything possible to help my buddy tag his before gun season and we are looking for any advantage we can get!

My 2 cent's. (Save your $$$ ) Hunted for 35 year's and have tried em all Tinks, Code blue, Golden estrus etc. and have scared more deer off then attracted. I use Red Fox urine as a cover scent on my boot's ( Get from trapping mag) and thats it. Have actually killed 2 red foxes that came in following my path and had a 115" 8 pt. saturday that walked down trail and made scrap right where I had walked in that morning. Again JMO.

I have tried a few, mainly just spraying down a clean rag and dragging it into the stand. Never had anything follow it in.
Here's what I don't like about hanging scents, buck bombs, etc. : If the deer smells the scent and comes in, it will be coming in downwind and more than likely catch your scent as well. I'd rather take the chance that a deer will come by on my upwind side on their own, rather than luring them downwind of me.

I've never really had what I would consider "success" with scents. Most of the time, the deer either seem to ignore it or spook, so I quit using them.

The only thing that I've ever seen to work was the Buck Bomb. Had never used anything before and have used it the past two years. First time I used it had a buck walk up and was sniffing the can. But I will say don't use more than one maybe 2 in your area in one season. I know a buddy of mine that was using it every time he went out. After the 2nd time he used it didn't see anything.

I've never been very successful using scents. The best results I have had came from a buck bomb and from using tinks mock scrape. Buck bombs are expensive, IMO, so I only buy two a year. The mock scrape has helped improve scrape activity.

I've had a deer follow a drag that I did with Tinks back in the early 1990's. I started the drag when I left the road and hung it up in a branch about 60 yds upwind. (gun hunting)
I have a dripper over a scrape now with active scrape in it that I just added some Golden estrus. More for a "I wonder if it will bring anything in" than anything else. Other than that one deer, I haven't had any success in using scents.
Trail cam is set up over the scrape so we'll see!!!

I place a drip bag using "active scrape" over a mock scrape, placed about two-three weeks before firearm season. I use Tinks 69 used as a drag to my ladder stand, then placing near my stand. Taken several Bucks using this method. However have taken several Deer using no scents at all, in areas that have few signs of Deer activity. Usually I harvest antlerless Deer using no scents.

Exactly the same conclusion I've came to after 30 years hunting..scents spook more deer than they will ever bring in...save your money and just hunt scent free.

I have had excellent first-hand results on both bucks & does using various high quality "doe pee" & "doe in heat/estrous" products in active scrapes, @ deer trail crossings, deer beds, & the use of drag-rags. It is not by-chance encounters. I have watched many bucks & does react positively/curiously as they change their travel direction & head right to me for the shot on the scent trail that I laid down with their nose to the ground while popping their head up from time to time looking for the source of the scent. It is really cool to watch a buck hit the scent I laid-down, get fired-up, rub trees, clean-out a scrape(s), urinate &/or defecate to freshen-up the scrape(s) on the path that I doctored-up & laid-down as they start flehmening & drooling while looking for the hot doe. But the key to making this work is being super scent-free, use of cover scent, & working the prevailing wind in your favor. I have taken many deer as they walk the exact same route that I took to my tree stand. I love the pass-thru shots right under my tree on unsuspecting standing &/or bedded deer.

Funniest "SCENT" story I have ever read was from a book by Gene and Barry Wensel. Barry talked about collecting his wife's dirty tampon's and hanging them in tree's. His quote "thats what the string's are for"" LOL. He said he had great success using them. He even went as far as saying he collected them, bagged them and stored them in freezer untill he needed them. (Not making this up.) LOL. Now I have never tested this, nor am I gonna try this. Just a funny story in regard's to scent's.

The last time we bear hunted we used unused tampons for sent pads. We tied the string around a limb and soaked them in vanilla. The guys we were hunting with said it was great cover sent and they had used this method for years. I killed a nice bear first evening. So no complaints.

Just a funny story in regard's to scent's. I'm not THAT desperate to kill a deer.. The only time I can positively say a scent worked for me during the rut was with some James Valley fox urine with a "hint of deer musk". I won it is a door prize at a 3D shoot. I stuck it in my junk drawer and forgot about it for several years. The stand I was going to gun hunt on that particular opening day was a ways back and I thought I'd cover my entrance scent by using the fox urine. I applied it to my boots just inside the woods by my truck. I reapplied it about half way to my stand. I walked by my stand at 20 yards and doubled back to it. About a half hour after shooting light I heard deer running and knew a chase was on. The sounds were back towards the way I came in. Next thing I know I see a good ten pointer with his nose down following my trail in. He was at a fast and steady walk. At 20 yards he met Mr. Remington Slugger. I guess they will work if things are right...

I tried some buck bomb (69?) last year (got on sale cheap at Menards) during the end gun season, didn't seem to attract anything in my normal hunting woods at all even though a friend of mine swears by it. I did learn on the late hunt at Shades not to spray until after morning light. I used some from my stand and a little while later had a buck come in from downwind, too bad it was still way before legal hours. Coincidence? Lesson learned, yep. Would I use it again, undecided.

As far as scrape scents go, I carry my own with me in my personal bladder. Human urine is as good as any. I've pee'd in many a scrape. Try it, it works!
