On Friday a crew consisting of myself, HoosierCanuck, Hoosierhunter, Shootsa410, Quacking Tim, and his buddy (can't remember his name) went out to one of Tim's hotspots to try our luck. Things started slow, with calm wind and nothing more than cloudy skies as we set up and waited. It was nearly 10am before we saw the first goose, and along with the geese came snow showers. We were pummeled with a constantly changing wind direction, blinding snow, and great numbers of geese. For the vast majority of our hunt our 10 dozen or so full bodies were transformed into snow geese on one side as the sideways blowing snow coated the windward side with a blanket of white. Amazingly as the geese would work into the wind all they would see was the uncoated sides of the dekes and that was enough to spell doom for 19 of them. We had 6 guys, but 5 shooters for the most part as Matt was shooting the hunt for the H.I.T. Squad. Had we waited another 30 minutes we probably would have gotten our limits as we had geese trying to come into our field during clean up (doesn't that ALWAYS happen???) The interesting part of the hunt was when a giant was up-ended and came crashing down into one of the Dakota Decoys we had set up. The impact of the big goose was enough that it snapped the head off the deke, and busted the metal stand along with the retaining strap that secures the deke to the stand. It was a violent collision for sure!
Pics will be forthcoming as Hoosierhunter and HoosierCanuck went up to Mishawaka for the Hoosier H.I.T. Squad Celebrity hunt today and tomorrow. Matt had the camera so it will probably be a few days for him to get the pics posted. A big thank you to Quackin Tim for giving the invite for the hunt.... It was a great time!

Good time by all, except for one decoy. I can't wait for us to hunt again sometime. I can't wait to see our pic as well as the ones from the celebrity hunt.

Tim....... my spots are HOPPING after the snow and warmer weather. We'll probably do a big hunt on Thurs or Friday of next week......and we'll go for the full-limit. I'll keep you posted as the week goes on as to what the geese are doing.

I drove home Thursday before the "storm" to 2000+ geese dropping in on the ground we hunt and the "refuge" in the middle. The really sad part is I am not in County that is part of the reduction.

Should have hunted the morning and not the afternoon! Had the x and plenty of groups, just no weather and finishers. Birds had been worked before.

I'll keep you posted as the week goes on as to what the geese are doing. Sounds good. I took a young kid back to the same spot. The geese were hitting the creek except for one small flock came over and did it just right. I didn't even shoot so he could enjoy shooting his first goose. Well now we are still trying to shoot his first goose. One of the locals stopped by and thanked us for shooting these birds, and gave me his name and number so he could help me locate where the birds are landing. I think I found a good area to hunt.

Finally got time to respond and post up some pics from the hunt!! It was a great time, and very challenging conditions to film in!!! Thanks again Tim!! ; The hunters: The "Goosemaster" Art Spancake (shootsa410) Tim Powell (Quackingtim) Tim's buddy, Doug Travis Peter (BSUTravis) Daniel Rowe (Hoosiercanuck) And your's truly, me, Matt Haase (Hoosierhunter), getting down!!! ;D The decoys, Dakota decoys!! Yes, there was a bloody mess all over the snow!!! ;D This is what happens when you down a 10 lb. goose on top of a Dakota Decoy!!! ;D It snapped the head off, smashed the base, bent the steel stand, and blew out the bungee cord legs!! Very cool!!! ;D And finally the "hero" shot!! 19 geese for the day.
