Anyone know a lower cost taxidermist ($300 or less) that can do a shoulder mount for me in central Indiana? Thanks.

I know a guy in the Brookville area. He's done quite a bit of work for me and my hunting buddy. He is in that ballpark for price. PM me if interested and I'll give you his number.

Have you ever thought about a skull mount? Once I did my first one I've been hooked. I'll never pay for a shoulder mount again.

I have seen them but love the shoulder mounts. They are nice though.

That being said, I'll never pay that much again but since it was my first I wanted it to be top notch. Good luck with your search.

I'm tighter than bark on a tree. Pushing 500 bucks is just far out of my range. That's nearly a whole weeks pay, when I get 40 (too much rain for masonry). But I'm still thinking. I just can't see myself paying over 300.

I agree with what a lot of others are saying....spend what it takes to get a quality job done. Your first is special. You can get a quality job done in the $400-$500 range. If you don't have that kind of cash right now, put a little money back every week and get it to the taxidermist of your choice when you have the money saved up.

Most good taxidermists will have your Buck for a year to a year and half before completion. Ask if you can make periodic payments..

I have money saved. Been saving for months now. My brother had his done two years ago for 275 and it turned out beautiful. The guy has since had health issues and stopped doing it. He did a fine job. I'm starting to see why I need to spend my money to get a good looking mount. Just gonna be tough on me. Lol.

A good Euro mount is ten times better than a bad shoulder mount. Most taxidermist do take 50% deposits. But if things are that tight, some people have trouble coming up with the balance even a few months later(and then the taxidermist is stuck with a mount that isn't their trophy). Be realistic, and both you and your taxidermist will be happy.

A firm believer (now since I did it cheap on my first ones and wish I hadn't) that if a rack is not worth a GOOD job, it's not worth mounting a full shoulder mount......to me, now. Something popped into my head though. HOPEFULLY you or someone caped your buck out ASAP and it's not still hanging......right???
One of the prerequisites of a great mount is get the hide off and salted or at least frozen ASAP. One option is to get the cape taken care of and stored properly and just take your time setting funds back. That's not to say SOMEONE doesn't do a presentable job around 300 but it sounds a little low but I'm hardly in the loop these days. Personally, I feel you can get a mount done that looks nice, but it may not in several years so quality work is pretty important as well as some intermediate care down the road for a young fella like you to hang onto one for life. I spent a couple weeks with Joe Meder ( world champion whitetail taxidermist a couple times and also became one of the judges for such later on ) in Iowa in 98 and I've attended two world championships just as a spectator. Joe had several live bucks outside the shop one could walk up to and study features at close range. It was priceless information for me. The championship, I assume, still moves around the country each year but should any get a chance to attend it's quite a wonderful display of some really awesome work. Before working with Joe and the competitions I THOUGHT I knew what a good mount looked like....HAHAHA I found out differently in short order. All my old cheap mounts fell apart one way or another and my good ones got stolen so I pretty much lost the "yen" to have another but, while the odds are low since I don't exclusively hunt for a big buck if I dumb into one, I'll mount it myself but with outside help fleshing the cape. Ye ol body would go on strike doing such these days LOL. I could still complete the actual mounting, SLOW but....still doable I think. God Bless
