Hoosiercanuck and myself hooked up with Cap'n Kevin Smith of River City Outfitters & Hoosier H.I.T. Squad fame for a field hunt this morning. We were supposed to be joined by Hoosierhunter2, however he had some lame excuse about the volume on his clock radio being turned down, so he didn't hear the alarm. So, while he was snoring away, we were busy laying the smack down on the geese. We were covered up all morning with flocks, never going more than 2-3 minutes without birds in sight. We had to compete with live-decoys, but we had our limit in about 90 minutes of hunting. Dan dropped a definate migrator out of sky, as Kevin I.D.'d one of Dan's geese as a Richardson's goose. It was a great day, plenty of action, and it was great finally getting to hunt with Kevin. We'll do it again for sure! Kev retrieving the last 2 birds of the morning: BSU & Kevin: Dan & Kevin: Group Shot:

Mark, A Richardson goose is a subspecies of the Canada Goose, it is a type of cackler with a shorter beak, shorter neck, and obviously a smaller body, kind of like a mini-canada goose. ;D

I am thinkin there was like 34 sub-species of canadians?

After a bit o' research........ the amount of sub-species is highly debated among those types of biologists that have WAY too much time on their hands. Generally most say it's in the upper teens, but some sub-divide the sub-species and you do get numbers into the 20's and 30's.
That's one of the things that the Feb goose season will check..... they will be removing the heads of all the checked geese, so that they can be truly identified and grouped by various methods.

After seeing the difference in the head and neck of the Richardson compared to the Giant Canada's it's quite a difference. The Richardson's come from the James Bay area North of Ontario. Quite a journey to Central Indiana.

The answer to the question everybody is asking. There are 18 sub species of canada geese according to the Head waterfowl biologist from North Carolina(Doug Howell) He goes to every flyway council meeting in the country. He has taught me alot in the past few years. The Richardson goose is the third smallest of the 18 sub species. The Hutchinson is second with the cackler being number one weighing in at around three and half pounds. Hope that info helps. Kevin

I forgot to include the Aluetian. Anyway those are the four smallest of the sub species. Kevin

yea thats more what i had in mind tim.... either way... any of the small ones are a heck of a bonus. Had 2 of those on my work pond early october... and 1 yesterday was there with a wad for about an hour. I want one pretty bad... We have killed 2 what i call "lessers" this year... guess i dont know the real name for them... just definaltely one of the smaller breeds.. but the head and beak are not as short and stubby as a true cackler.
