So, I've hunted squirrels most of my life and never really gave a thought to using a call until this year. I've always used my mouth to chatter if needed. So I picked up a Flextone caller. So far I've found it to be pretty effective in certain situations. First outing, I used it to bark immediately after shooting a squirrel. Within seconds, another gray popped his head out to investigate and he went down, too!
Today, I used the call on a different scenario. I wasn't long in the woods when I heard one cutting way up a hickory tree. Too much foliage, so I chattered about a dozen times on the call and then went silent. A minute later, I heard the dude scamper from his perch and kept the rifle trained in his general direction. For a second, he came in the open. I steadied the crosshairs and POW! Down he came!
So, how many of you use a call? Why or why not? And if you do, any suggestions for newbies like me with this crazy thing?

I like to take a coin and scrape it across the grooves on the butt of my gun stock. Makes a good imitation of cutting sound. It's worked for me a lot of times.

I have had good results with the MR Squirrel whistle. The first time I used it I could not get a shot off as the squirrel kept coming to me. Finally he stopped at about 15 feet.

I've never used a Squirrel call either. I just park myself under a tree near Hickories, Oak, or other species of trees where Squirrels usually visit. Sitting still has worked for me for as long as I've hunted Squirrels.

I've had a squirrel call of some sort for almost 40 yrs. With the bellows type calls, I've had them not work, more than work. But I will say, when they work, they work very well. Most of the time, I've made a sucking sound, with my lips, on the back of my hand, to get them to look from around a tree. I've also rubbed two quarters together, to get their attention, with limited results. I'd say it's a mixed bag.

The only call I've got and used is a barking call,it's only worked a couple of times in all the years I've used it so I don't even bring it anymore. I just use the old stalk and/or sitting methods.

I remember reading, a long time ago, of rubbing two poker chips together to get a squirrel's attention. Never tried it, but it was in a major outdoors mag so it must work.

I have two that I acquired 20 to 25 years ago. I carry one all the time, but using them is a different story. I would guess that I might use it 305 of my trips to the woods, but they seem to work 70% of those times. Like deer, turkey, and duck calls, when to use one is more important than if you use one.

I have had one for several years but 99/100 times I will forget to bring it with me. The last squirrel I got I used the call but not sure if it had an effect. Perhaps he started moving sooner after hearing me walking through the brush to my spot on the ridge because I made the call and he figured I was another squirrel.
Going to try to make an effort to utilize it more this season.

I had a whistle and bellows call, but I had more luck with the bellows call. I only used them when the foliage was so thick that I could not find the squirrel cutting. Most of the time they would move to look for the barking call, but they would run and hide when I would use the whistle.
Unfortunately I have not been able to find my bellows call for a few years. I will probably have to break down and buy another so that I can find the one I lost.

I remember reading, a long time ago, of rubbing two poker chips together to get a squirrel's attention. Never tried it, but it was in a major outdoors mag so it must work. Grandpa showed me how to do that with half dollars but they are hard to come by now so I use quarters. It still makes about the same sound & I almost always have two or more in my pocket. It is sounds like a squirrel chewing on a nut, so the other squirrels get curious & come out looking for where the sound is coming from.

If it's the bellow call I'm thinking of you just put the accordion like part on your leg or something and push in and out in the rhythm needed to sound like a squirrel barking. Cutting is when squirrels are eating nuts and the shell pieces fall to the ground.
