Should a hunter identify the species before he shoots?, absolutely. But I don't know any experienced duck hunter that hasn't made a mistake in identifying a bird. If you know it's a diver and all species are in season then there is no reason to pass on the shot. Congrats on the beautiful birds Pigeon!

3 years ago I was with a guy who accidently shot a hen woody that was with a flock of teal. We were at the slough and we turned it after and explained it to the CO. He was upset but also complimented us for being honest. I will tell ya what, its hard to tell sometimes especially during early season. After that happened I make sure when the teal come in i dont go after big flocks

Just listen for the whistle of the wings on the Goldeneyes...and they have the most white of most any duck....
