I just saw this rule in the reqs for the park hunt at Ouabache. Hunters MUST hunt from a tree stand. Hunters may NOT hunt from the ground. As an older hunter it is unsafe for me to hunt from a tree stand due to health and physical issues. I am drawn for the first hunt but may have to pass due to this rule. Is there any other park hunt where a hunter may not hunt from the ground? I am not talking about using a ground blind just sitting in a folding chair on the ground.

Schoolmaster, Does it say "how high" the stand must be off the ground? If not, just attach a stand to a suitable tree, then sit on it with your feet within a foot or two of the ground? Best way around this that I see. Good luck and knock down a big one! Bob

Yeah I guess to abide by the letter of the law, I could build a 3 foot tree stand just enough to get my feet off of the ground. Thanks for the idea.

I was thinking that Newport had such a rule.....
Some folks just do not feel comfortable getting up off the ground and I don't believe that the state should make them do it..

Does it say "treestands only" or "no ground blinds"? All the regs for Potato Creek say is no ground blinds. There is a big difference between the two.

Both tree stands only and no ground blinds.

Ft Harrison says no ground blinds but nothing about requiring a tree stand. I would call the park manager and discuss your physical limitations with him. Some state parks make special provisions for handicapped hunters.

You wouldn't even need a climber. You could use a ladder stand with just one ladder section. Most sections are either 4 or 5 feet. Is this a gun hunt or archery? I thought at one point in time the Archery Park Hunts required hunters to be in a stand, but honestly can't remember for sure.

Gun hunt. and Yes part of a stand would be shorter however I have a balance problem and if I fell I would want to be real close to the ground. When hunting on the ground I sit in a folding chair and don't have to worry about it. Have not hunted off the ground in years. I understand the safety aspect of the rule but I have no business in a stand.

I spoke with the Manager of Ouabache State Park and he is willing to work with anybody that cannot hunt from a tree. I believe he inherited the current rules, but is willing to make exceptions and possibly change the rule in the future. I would recommend giving them a call. He seems to be very reasonable and understanding.

The manager at Ouabache was kind enough to allow me to hunt from the ground. If you are in a similar situation, contact the man in charge and see what they will do for you.
