Hello,
I'm new to hunting and this site. I was born in the inner city, but have always had the country in my heart. Yes, my family is from Kentucky. Last year, I sold all my photography equipment to buy my daughter a vehicle, but then wondered what I was going to do for a hobby. I've had guns since I was old enough to work for money, so I thought, "I'll hunt!" My second thought was, "...but where?" I still have this problem. Being an inner city kid with no dad around, I didn't hunt, and knew no one who did. The guns were to keep people out of my house ...they still work good for this.
The only four legged animal that I've shot was a rabbit, but MAN that was fun! I was in a zone as soon as I caught him in my peripheral vision. This was a strange sensation, one I'd only experienced a few times. Tunnel vision instantly. Even though I knew that rabbit was running and jumping fast, he was moving in slow motion in my mind. He quickly made a turn to run into a bush, and I knew I had to get him before he could get there. It's amazing how quickly the mind can process information. It were as if my mind were calculating how fast the rabbit was going, how much distance to the bush and where I needed to aim. I had rabbit for dinner, yum!
My plan is to hunt every animal that I can, or let's say, any animal that I'm willing to eat. Spring Turkey hunting was a blast! No harvest, but I learned a lot and that was worth every hour in the woods. I have many questions about the fall season, and may skip the turkey.
I've been looking for places to hunt waterfowl, with no boat or dog, I'm looking for swampy areas. I printed off a photo of every bird listed by the DNR ...safe and legal ...just like Ted Nuget would say ...know the rules and be safe!
Of course deer are on my list. I did hunt once in the winter. A friend invited me to hunt with his two nephews. These were boys were all boy and the coolest kids that I've ever met for their age. One had harvested a 10 pointer earlier in the season. I asked if he mounted it. He said, "No, it was a basket buck." Of course, I'm a novice hunter with very limited knowledge other than being safe. I thought the boy said bastered buck. I was sooooooooo confused. I asked him, "How did that happen?" He said, "I don't know, bad genes, I guess." Later, I asked someone who already knew that I'm a little simple-minded what a bastered buck was. He laughed and said, "You mean basket buck?" Yep, simple minded and a little hard of hearing.
