Greetings Had three outings with the stalking client and he has had two Bucks. I think he expects a deer every time he goes out , but i do not have them fenced in so i cannot arrange that for him, myself, or anyone else. Never mind we are all different, sometimes i think people forget it is called Hunting for a reason, and not like clay pigeon shooting were there will be another along in a second. He should of had another but hesitated too long. And the one this morning was out of range for him although i would of shot it no problem, but one cannot knock a man for not taking the shot if not happy with it. Right my friends i am out with him in another half hour so i had better get my boots on and ready to go. regards Billy

Just come in seen one buck and we got it, not a big animal at all , but man what a stalk. I would of been happy just with that one stalk in the week. I went into a deer glade i call Buck corner and just stood there, the stalker thought there was nothing in but Ellie the dog told me different.
All of a sudden a doe and buck appears ninety yards in front of him , well instead of being slow and steady he rushed and spooked them, so i told him to sit down and keep very quiet About ten minutes later two deer appeared five hundred yards down the glade, now there is no way we shoot at five hundred yards, so i had t get him into them, I finally got him into 120 yards and got hung up by the doe, we very quietly stalked around for over and hour and a half to get a good shot at the buck. It was getting dark so i told him to put the bullet through its shoulders to knock it straight down, he sent the bullet and it went true to aim the buck dropped dead as it hit the ground. Before anyone says anything i will explain , i am not in the buisness of meat production, i am in the buisness of humane dispatch of deer, shoulder's are a very secondary thing to me, while at work. Happy client tonight, yipee right my friends it is 9.40pm here and i have to meet him at 6.00 am so i think i better get in the shower and into bed. regards Billy

That high shoulder shot will put them down when you don't want them to run. No excuses necessary.

He got another two this morning here they are in the chiller all five, sorry no heads to show , he has taken them with him, That is five hunts and five deer , see what happens for the next three outings. The heads are all in velvet, i cannot understand why they have come to get trophies this early in the season when every thing is still in velvet and if not in velvet they will be white. Mine is not to reason why , i just do as i am asked , within reason. right friends i am tired , cup of tea time, and a snooze in Grandpa's seat, hehehe regards Billy

Looks like some good eating heading for the larder.
I am little curious about who pays who to hunt with you though? My understanding is that these would be "well to do" clients?? I'm not trying to start anything but am just looking for more background on how who decides who can hunt.
Over here getting an early velvet rack can be a different kind of trophy for some people...for those that need another kind of trophy, but generally the early seasons are pretty much archery only.

Hi dadsr Anyone who wants to have a go can book in to hunt. I usually take the locals out if they want to come, I am stepping in for another ranger who has cut his hand. The price I am not sure of but it is something like a hundred pound an outing and no limit of bucks. That is about the going rate everywhere. And there is no trophy fee,s on top. That is it. If it was for the few then I think the rangers would create merry he'll, or I hope they would Hunting should be for all. Obviously there is a limit to how many we can have because at the end of the day we have a cull to achieve. We are a goverment department and have to be seen to be fair to everyone. So the answer is any working man who's saves a couple of hundred pound can afford to stalk here. And it will remain like that. Regards Billy

Thanks for the info Billy. Just checked and an English pound is about equal to $1.50 US...so for about $150 per outing anyone can go hunting for deer? Is the hunting only allowed on land that is controlled by the government?

That's too much money for some of these guys. 100 Sterling is 150.52 US green.
Reckon that includes food and lodging, ammo, gutting, skinning and processing the meat?

That timex is cheap over here in Europe, most places also charge a trophy fee which can be a lot of money. That is the stalking alone, it is up to them to find lodgings, ammo etc.
No dadsr providing you have an open rifle certificate you can hunt anywhere with permission, A friendly farmer can give permission, no problem. and if that is the case it would probably cost nothing. The forestry commission do it because people ask for it, for instance this group of four Belgians have been into the office today to pay and book next years trip, it is very cheap compared to hunting in there own country so my client tells me. Any way we saw two bucks tonight and got one of them, so he is happy again, i hope. Right my friends i am about to have a cup of tea and get to bed, out again at 6am. regards Billy

Billy: I don't mean this to hijack the thread, but I don't know where else to put it for you to see it. I ran across this on the internet and thought it was cool. Take a close look at the dog and you'll know why I threw it up on here. ;D

hehehhe Yes i can just imagine Ellie doing that, she is that soft. Stalker got another this morning, no good six pointers though, i think they have come too early in the season, it is still very cold, and i think the big bucks are staying in. Last stalk tonight then i am on my own again, i bet the big lads start showing up then.
Just for information it is 400 pound a day to shoot driven boar over on the continent , he tells me, you always see animals but not always get a shot at one, Shooting running stuff with a rifle does not appeal to me to be honest ,but that is the way they do things over there, because hunting ground is so expensive they all join together in a syndicate and drive the stuff to waiting rifles, then the next time those that walked, stand and have stuff driven to them. You cannot shoot a fed flight pond for ducks and you cannot shoot ducks after sunset. There is no lamping for foxes allowed. In one half of Belgium you can shoot woodcock in the other half it is not allowed There is no breeding of pheasants on game farms everything is wild, only cock pheasants are shot, the hens die of old age. The hunters themselves have to take five exams to be given the hunting license Just some of the differences to England and i suspect America. regards Billy

Look out tonight I think on my own ground for a meat buck. Little bit of luck and the freezer will be full again. I have two pieces of ground myself that has nothing to do with work, well one has to eat occasionally. And I'm not paying for meat, hehehe.

Well had another good day and if things had gone right i would of had a better day. Had two this morning and two this evening, shot one at twenty four yards in the neck with the 308 it was pretty terminal. The bucks seem to be on the move so one must make hay while the sun shines and get stuck into them now. First clean Buck tonight nothing good but at least it is clean, see about a picture in the morning. right chaps last cup of tea then bed again regards Billy

The buck on the right hand side is quite interesting he should have a lot bigger antler growth than it ha, the buck was a reasonable weight for just coming out of winter. When i opened him up it was evident that his liver was not the way it should be, on closer inspection it was full of liver fluke, it has been that wet here that the fluke the animals get off the grass are everywhere, Farmers are losing sheep on quite a scale because of it. There is concern over the brown hares that are dying because of liver fluke. All this is down to the very wet prolonged weather we have been getting. regards. Billy

A very wet Monday and i did not see much but i got the only buck i saw, a 250yd shot into its shoulder, the bullet went in true to aim through its chest destroying all the clockwork gear but that animal still ran a good seventy yards, i could not believe it when it did not drop to shot, but my best mate Ellie went in to the trees and took me straight to it no messing. Then i had to meet some contractors who are clearing some willow that has taken over a bank and is stopping me getting deer from it. One of the contractors is a rather nice looking girl i just cannot get used to seeing girls in what i obviously wrongly call a man's job, throwing a chainsaw around, i must be old fashioned. Then from there i had to met a man who came to make sure my larder scales are weighing true. So this morning has been a bit of everything, but now it is cup of tea time. regards Billy
