Please wear your life jackets.
Duck hunter drowns in Daviess County when boat tips over By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PLAINVILLE - A duck hunter drowned when his boat tipped over on a lake in northern Daviess County, Indiana Conservation officers said.
Brian Alderson, 25, of Avon, was with three friends Tuesday morning setting out decoys in the lake near Plainville, about 40 miles southwest of Bloomington, when their boat capsized.
The other three men in the boat and a hunting dog were able to swim to shore.
The men called authorities, who began a search using boats and a helicopter.
Alderson's body was recovered from the water about six hours later, officials said.
None of the men were wearing life jackets, conservation officers said.

Thats a shame to hear. But remember guys, decoy bags full of decoys seem to float nicely in an emergency. Goose floaters work well too.

Also pay attention to weight limits in watercraft. Not saying thats what happened, but this one gets shrugged off too often.

Very sad news....... I always wear one while the motor is running or when setting out the dekes but I usually ditch it when we get set up for the hunt. I hate to hear that news.....only 25.

Is it? 2 highschool kid's boat capsized at Braidwood Lake a couple years ago. Guess how they found them. If you guessed one had a goose floater under each arm and the other holding onto the decoy bag then you are correct! Im pretty sure you'd grab the dekes too instead of drowning. But then again, some people never cease to amaze me.

However if everyone wore a life jacket they wouldn't need any other advice. Sad way to end for a 25 year old young man. Prayers to the family... ..

I wouldn't need the decoy bag because I'd have my PFD on. As would everyone in my boat. Yeah, sure dekes float and may save your sorry ###, but I wouldn't bet my life on it!! Would you?? How many people are saved because of a decoy bag compared to PFD's? Its no contest!! There's absolutely no excuse for not having PFDs on. Period. End of story.
But then again, some people never cease to amaze ME.

Im sure the statistics are greater in favor of PFD's but in my experience I have yet to see a waterfowler with one on before getting into the boat. So in a life or death situation you better grab onto anything you can. That's all that I am saying. Im not arguing one vs. the other. Im saying that anything is better than nothing. I cant believe that within the course of 1 week I've had 1 noob argue that it's better to hunt in the sunshine and another saying they'd rather drown than be saved by a goose floater or two. What's this forum coming to?

What's this forum coming to? Not to hijack the thread but the guy disagrees with you that cloudy weather is the best hunting weather that means he's wrong? I know it's hard to believe but other folks have different preferences and opinions than you. If you gave me the choice I'd take a bright sunny day over clouds anytime.

What's this forum coming to? Don't take it personal, pointless arguing and debating is a spreading cancer over here. You'll get numb to it after a while. Not sure why you'd want to drown. I know when I hunt Erie I have a life jacket on at all times in the boat. But I wouldn't hesitate to grab a pile of decoys or even step on my buddy's head to keep mine above water. Sunny skies, cloudy skies, doesn't matter. You're only going to kill birds if they are flying. I've seen them fly good in both situations and bad in both.

YOU WON'T SHOOT ANYTHING ANYWAY!!!! ;D ;D 911 is in Tennessee this week.....so I will fill in for him as I know he would write, "OUCH!!!" LOL Waterfowling is like real estate: Location, location, location. Me personally? I'll take the cloudy day, but did I let the sunny skies stop me from going out this morning? Nope........did I kill any? Nope. As far as the entire point of grabbing a floating decoy, I fully agree that I'd be reaching for something floating even though I DID have a PFD on...... if you had a bag of a dozen dekes floating there, you could at least pull yourself up on them somewhat and get some of your body out of the water and delay the effects of the cold water on your temperature. Silly to "debate" this topic, everyone knows that a PFD is essential, but hey......accidents do happen, that's why they are accidents.

No. In all reality, I think it's good to get a good debate going. But for a good ing match I usually head over to a "different forum." I dont expect it here. And twice in the past week I've pretty much come up with bogus ideas. One instance I was just checking to see if anyone was hunting in the rain/snow and clouds and this time trying to give the worst case scenario advice. Man, people are getting cold hearted over here.

People's nerves are on edge Tom..... Deer season is about over, this warm weather is cramping most waterfowlers style, post-partum Christmas........there are several reasons why people aren't being jolly. Me? I'm just happy to be able to get out there, rain/shine/fog/sun/snow......matters not to me!
