Reminder..... In order to legally possess a found set of antlers like this one needs to get a permit from the local Conservation Officer... what does that mean, "like this one"? You mean attached to the deer?

You mean attached to the deer? Still attached to the skull. Sheds are OK to possess without a permit.. See.... www.eregulations.com/indiana/hunting/general-regulations/

This came into being during the first big EHD epedemic. The DNR was afraid that folks would bow kill a buck and then say it was an EHD buck and thus be able to keep on hunting another buck..

Was back around my pasture and a little way into my creek bottom yesterday while it was raining doing a little mushroom hunting for supper and got the whiff of something dead but was just out in shorts and tennis shoes so didn't go exploring too much...will have to go back again today...grrrr.... Edit-about what I was afraid of ....found a decent 8/9 pointer just on the other side of the creek from where I was at. This is easily close to a 1/2 mile from any road so I'm really suspicious. I'm sending an email to our local DNR biologist along with the picture I took to see if he wants to take a look. Don't know how much of the deer has to be left but this one has obviously been down a couple of days. If someone wants to post the pic I took let me know and I'll email it to them since my picture posting skills are next to nil

Here is what I got back from our local DNR biologist: Doug,
Hi. Thanks for the email. Apparently there weren't any signs of the deer being struck by a car (unlikely due to the distance from the highway), or being shot? When you remove the head or antlers, look for a bluish or purplish hue to the skin, especially on the head, or tongue. I did have a report of what sounds like EHD of a buck in the Wabash River near Black Rock. Only one other suspect report. I appreciate that you let me know.
A conservation officer here in the office said that you need a permit to possess the antlers. If you send me your mailing address and date of birth, we can issue a permit to you.
So I emailed my info back to him and asked if the coloration would be apparent on the exterior of the hide or just underneath and got a pretty quick reply back: Doug,
Attached is a Permit for Possession of Deer to cover your possession of the deer head and rack you sent me a photo of.
Regarding the bluish/purple hue, it will be visible on the exterior of the skin. Good luck collecting the rack. It was a heavy, interesting rack. Probably a three year old, maybe four based on the antler diameter at the base.
Thought the skin coloration observation might be useful for input here. Also reinforces the need for the permit for attached antlers! ....and it WAS an interesting rack Guess I'll be working on another Euro mount

Sorry to see that Doug. I've found Dean (and the gals in his office) to be great help. We had to call in a doe found dead on our property recently - did not appear to be EHD but she was too far gone for a sample.

If anyone had any doubts about the impact on souther Putnam county, all they needed to is take a drive down Hyw 40 today between Mt Meridian and Reelsville. If I had to harbor a guess, I would say I saw at least 300 vultures in the 15-20 mile stretch. It had to be one of the eeriest sights I've ever seen. Masses of the big buzzards circling around Big Walnut Creek. I know that is not a positive ID for dead deer, but based on what has been reported so far, it's a pretty good bet.

While 300 does sound high, Larry, I can recall counting 25-30 vultures roosted in ONE tree along Big Walnut just a few years back...
