duff,
The rig is a simple one. I'll start at the hook and explain my way to the rod tip.
#10 short shank GOLD hook tied to a rod length leader. Tie the leader to the fat end of a clear torpedo float (adjust a bubble are my convenience favorite). Tie the skinny end of the torpedo float to the rod end of your line and tip the hook with a bee moth. Those were caught at a 4 to 5 foot depth in 12-14 feet of water.
So you should have a 4 to 5 foot leader for January fishing, about 3 feet will do in late Feb. The gold hook seems to attract more attention, so thats what I go with. Resist the temptation for split shot, the idea is to simulate a critter that hatched out.
We normally give the rig a couple of twitches every 2-3 minutes to simulate a microinvertabrate swimming, but they weren't hitting that. We started drifting the rig and couldn't take them off the hook fast enough. Late Febuary/Early March you will absoloutly kill the big gills and red ears in So. Indiana with this rig.

Thanks, I used to use those floats a lot for crappie fishing though.

It seems weird to see a nice stringer of open water Gills in mid January! Congrats Chico!
