Flying with him for decades and hadn't paid a bit of attention to what he was doing to keep that thing in the air or what it took to bring it down safely.
It is not all that hard to fly a small plane. I took an aviation course in highschool with a couple others. The class was small enough that the instructor took us up if we passed the licensing test (we didn't get our license, just took the same test prospective pilots do). On the first and only time being in the pilot's seat, I taxied, took off, located and flew over my house, returned to the airport and landed the plane. All while being supervised, but not assisted. My point being, if she had paid attention at all, she would have been able to do it without much trouble at all.
Now I realize that being in a stressful situation would not have helped, but she probably would not have put it on its nose if she had been familiar with the operation of the aircraft.

It wasn't that she had much choice, she was going to end up on the ground one way or the other. I'd guess she had flew enough to see the basics and knew the basic feeling of the approach and touch down.
These things happen quite a bit really. I've flown passenger in a Super Cub a couple of time in Alaska, and always studied the basics a bit before each trip and even asked about certain situations with the pilot before taking off. Most likely, if your pilot dies in flight, you will too, but there's always a chance if you have some luck.

Any landing you walk away from is a good one.
