My son uses 7 1/2 through his 20ga with very good results. We skipped the 410 as I had too many wounded or got away when I was little (probably poor shot on my end). I thought the 20 would be too big and loud for him but with a little extra padding, ear plugs and me helping hold the gun while he practiced (A LOT!) on cans worked out very well and as I would have expected when he shoots at live game he doesn't hear or feel the shot.
I now leave his gun set up same as when he turkey hunts (extra full turkey choke). Shooting Squirrels, Rabbits, Crows and so on with the same gun gives him a lot of practice for the larger game.
As far as will it kill a Squirrel - took him out Sat morning and was back home in 30 minutes - he stood in one spot and took 5 grays from one Hickory. He shot each one as it came out to get a nut on the end of the branch. Average shot was about 40-50 yards and very few pellets in the meat. Man, was I ever proud!
