Just like geese, why even have a season for them? Leave it open year round!

I have been hunting squirrel for almost 50 years. When I was younger the AUG.15 opener was great however now with respect to the deer hunters I stay out of the woods during firearms season. I would love to have a season that runs till Feb. In my book nothing beats squirrel hunting on a sunny winters day. You ever read Bayou Bill Scifres? I still have, (I think), an article he wrote in the old Indiana Fins and Feathers magazine about how big the August 15 squirrel opener was where he grew up, in Crothersville. He talked about how so many guys who had grown up there and moved away to find work, came back the night before to be there for opening day-how they all gathered in the street to swap stories and talk strategies-how they all turned in early so they`d be ready to roll before the sun came up. How the lights popped on all over town, in the kitchens, and you could smell the eggs and bacon frying, coffee brewing, then the lights went back out as the “women folk” went back to bed and the men headed out to the woods to bag the makin`s of fried squirrel and gravy. He described in such detail, how he walked through the weed field to get to the tree line, and how he was soaked from the dew-then seeing a limb bounce down then back up under the weight of a squirrel, and how that drove the thoughts of sleep and being chilly from his mind as he began his stalk towards the tree. Bayou Bill is a Hoosier icon and treasure.

Matter of fact guys-I found the old article-I`d be happy to copy it to the thread here if anyone would be interested in reading a really neat piece of writing.
Woody-it wouldn`t be an infringement of any kind to post it here, would it?

I just e-mailed him Woody-thanks for the contact info. Man, he is a legend, and part of the reason I ever had an interest in outdoor writing. How great to write to Bayou Bill. Thanks again.

The nesting season in the South is a couple weeks ahead of the north end. So is the average birthing times. The idea, I assume, was to give the Northern animals a couple weeks to catch up with the Southern in young raising. Don't see why it would be changed, except maybe extend the northern season to match the gap.

i`m not sure why indiana has done it but illinois has done it for a bit now. illinois just extended the squirrel season this year feb15th from jan 31 statewide. the deer hunters pushed the heck out of this. i got more deer hunters asking me to take squirrel pre and post deer season this year. i heard the same thing "bloomin idiots are everywhere". i wonder how long it will take indiana to see the problem. indianapolis is packed with them.
