Had a great time Saturday with 14 kids we took to Royal Flush Preserve. No, it's not like hunting wild birds but the kids don't know better yet. Some had never fired a gun before and some were seasoned hunters. They all got to hunt behind good dogs and learn how to do it right. A couple of times it just wasn't safe to shoot and the kids let the birds go. Overall though all but one of the kids killed birds and some of the kids gave him birds to take home. I gotta tell you the future is in kids like these and today the future looks bright.

Thanks from here also and congrats to the kids that got to spend some time in the field. I heard that they were looking for kids to hunt Glendale, I think the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Last I heard, they were having trouble coming up with enough.

Probably true....we had 20 kids signed up and only 14 showed. The problem? No one to bring them. Next year I'm renting a van and going around picking up kids. We're going to have another one in January. Try for another 20 kids.

Add my thanks also. I started my son hunting this year. So far a big zero for rabbits and deer. Taking him to a Hunting Preserve (Flatrock) for Pheasant. While not the true example of Upland bird hunting at least he'll get a feel for shooting free flying birds.
Yes we need to get more kids into hunting.
Keep up the good work

Flatrock is over toward Shelbyville (north of there actually). REALLY!!!! Anyone got any info on this place, like a phone number. My kid has been bugging me to death about going to a bird perserve. We used to go to Rod Mace's place out by Rockville, but the last I heard he gave up the birds.

jack99, thanks for donating your time to such a worthy youth outing. Shawn has a nice spread & is very helpful with this type of activity since he is so laid-back. I enjoy watching the dogs work and take a few birds for dinner.

Everybody remember that it's all about the kids. I don't have any so I take as many out each year as I can. Take a kid hunting/fishing. Give back what you have learned and enjoyed outdoors. You'll be surprized how good it makes you feel.

By the way Merrill usually runs out of birds around the first of the year.

Jack;
Are you the person that spoke about Pheasants for Forever at the Sept. Marion County Hunter Education Program?

Well I have a hunt scheduled for next Thurs. with my Son at Flatrock. He has been hunting with me this season for Deer and Rabbit and poor old Dad couldn't put him onto any game this season . I thought this would be a great way to end the season; don't want him to get discouraged about hunting.

I thought this would be a great way to end the season; don't want him to get discouraged about hunting. Good idea. A lot of us hunters did not start out on deer when we were young. Heck there wasn't even a deer hunt in Indiana when I started hunting. We cut our hunting teeth on rabbits and squirrels.
