How many of you here still enjoy the sport of squirrel hunting? I don't see as many hunters chasing those tree rats like it was years ago. I still enjoy a quiet morning in the woods looking for those little bushey tails.

I usually get in a few hunts every year. I enjoy bowhunting them, but loosing arrows gets expensive so I don't bowhunt them much. I live in a community with lots of old farms being slowly bought up and sub-divided so I usually just pack a shotgun for safety reasons (don't want bullets raining down on people). The landowner's mom where I deer hunt likes squirrel, so I usually clean them and give them to her. Helps keep me in good graces with the landowner, and lets me have fun, too!

I don't really care much for it.
For the meat you get I'd just as soon have a hamburger but my Dad likes them.

Flavor wise I think squirrel is the best tasting wild meat there is. They are working the wild cherry right now.

While at the shooting range Sat. i noticed that the squirrels were cutting on white oat. lot of acorns laying on the ground and cuttings. the acorns were green. i thought it was a might early for them to be cutting on acorns but evidently not. most of my early squirrels come off of hickory trees. h.h.

I like hunting and eating them but I don't go after them until mid/late October. Same with bow hunting, don't like spending my time swatting skeeters when I need to be still and quiet.

For me squirrel hunting is where it all began with me. It will always be special season for me. It will hunt both days opening weekend, with a pistol and with a rifle! First meat of the season in the freezer and makes for a great transition into dove season! I love this stuff!!

So who's ready to bag a few ?
I've got my new springer sighted for open sights at 25 yards , and a 1" grouping is coming together nicely . A few more Shatter Blastâ„¢ targets and I'll be out there dotting their eyes . ;D The 10-22 and 20 guage are standing in the wings in case they're needed .

I like to go late season with a .22 handgun or air rifle........ Lots of fun but I dont care much for cleaning them. I used to take them to an old farmer down the road. Best neighbor I ever had but he past away this spring.

Any excuse to get in the woods works for me. I like to use a Smith & Wesson Model 22A. If I can get a solid rest the rat is going home with me.

Up here in the northern part of Indian we have mostly fox squirrels. they are a lot tougher to skin than the grays that are common down south. i started to use the step-on-the-tail-method to skin them a couple of years ago. it works a lot better than spitting the skin on the back and pulling the skin off. do any of you guys got any other ways to skin them? whats your favorite way to skin a squirrel? h.h.

Like many others, squirrel hunting is where I started as a kid. When I was a teenager, I squirrel hunted every weekend until bow season came in. After I got married, I got away from squirrel hunting until my first son turned 4. I've taken him every season now since then (5 years). That first year he went, he tagged along with me right by my side. Some hunts were fairly short, like the one where he found a stray dog at Morgan Monroe State Forest and decided the dog was more fun than the hunting. I can still see the look on his face the first time I knocked a squirrel out of a tree. He must have took off doing 90 mph running to where that squirrel landed on the ground! I took him thru the Hunters Education course this past winter, so he gets to be a shooter for the first time this year. Man, he is pumped up for opening day and so am I.
