Congrats Kelsey! Nice bird!! All of you youngsters did great, whether you got a bird or not. Don't ever fall into the trap of thinking a hunt is only successful when game is taken. Just being out there should put a smile on your face.

Took my 11-year old neighbor boy hunting this weekend. He could only hunt til 9a on Saturday due to ball games. We worked 2 longbeards for a coupla hens to drag away. We returned Sunday morning about 40 minutes before shooting time and set up a little closer. Had the 2 longbeards roosted about 150 yards behind us to the left and another gobbling bird about 70 yards behind us to the right. Textbook hunt, as the single bird pitched out and hit the ground about 15 yards to our left and half-strutted out into the hay field to knock my jake decoy off my hen. The result... ....a jelly-headed jakebird giving up the ghost at 6:55am at 15 yards out and 2 teary-eyed turkey hunters on top of the world!!! A HUGE jake at 20 1/2 lbs. Ben's first bird. Nothing in the world like taking a kid and calling in their first turkey!!!!!

My CONGRATULATIONS to that young hunter!!
That is a WHOPPER Jake!!
I just love it that so many kids are getting involved.
These "youth weekends" are just the ticket to get them started.
Thanks to everyone that took out a kid this last weekend..

Well, Jake didn't score this past weekend, but we sure had a ball. The Gibson county property was pretty tough to hunt due to a lot of standing water. We didn't strike a gobbler there, but we saw a lot of deer and Jake was amused when I hooted in three big owls that landed above us and hooted their heads off. We headed to the HNF for a Sunday hunt and stuck a Tom at first light. We got set up and worked him for about a half hour, but he didn't want to leave his hens and only came within 150 yds or so. Seeing him strut and gobble got Jakes blood going and he'll be joining us on the weekends for the rest of the season. Thanks to Timex for the Gibson county hunt and congrats to the winner with the first bird as well as all those kids who got their turkey this past weekend.
