My brother knew an West Virginia miner that poached unapologetically to feed his family. He killed scores of deer with a .22. "Shoot em in the eye-hole buddy!" he would say.
I think sometimes we worry too much about how big of a gun to use as opposed to where to put the bullet from said gun.

I think sometimes we worry too much about how big of a gun to use as opposed to where to put the bullet from said gun. Ive always said "all bullets kill, its the placement of the shot that counts"! Now that being said different constructed bullets perform in different ways at different speeds on different animals. The key to successfully and humanely killing the animal is use the properly constructed bullet at the speed it was designed for. When you do that, on a well placed shot the game will drop or go down very quickly. h.h.

Was at Bradeis guns yesterday. They had a few Handi-Rifles in this caliber there in black synthetic for $239.

The landowner where I hunt has now shot about four deer with a .44 Handi-Rifle, using off the shelf ammo--hollow points I think. None have went very far. One do this year went straight down. I'd love to have a Marlin, but price wise I might have to go with the handi-rifle.

I've had 4 Handi's and there are 2 others in the family. Of the 6 none have been accurate. My 357 was so bad that I sent it back and they replaced the barrel but it was still unacceptable. I would spend a little more and buy something else.

Most are tack drivers capable of better accuracy than most shooters can deliver.

Tim, a moderator over at graybeard.com says that H&R has an accuracy standard for their rifles, and that they will repair or replace as necessary. Mine, with one exception, have been decent shooters, and the one that wasn't received a new barrel, H&R even paid shipping charges.
I'd buy another Handi if in the market for one.

I think that you'll like the .44 mag. If you handload they're very versatile, but even if you don't, most of 'em shoot factory 240 grain loads pretty accurately.
