It's about covering a lot of ground by vehicle... LOOKING for a deer, to then get out and stalk up on.
In that scenario... you ARE using a motor vehicle to aid in the taking of game.
Same scenario... you're on a quad, legally, on an unmaintained county road. There are MANY of these that are essentially goat trails that a truck Can NOT get down, but it's legal to ride an ATV on IF you have it registered. You see a deer. Get off the quad, load your gun and shoot it. Illegal.
Again, not saying I agree with the interpretation of the law. But that's the law.
I posed the ?? to Buster on "ask the CO".

They'd be hearing from me in court if I was issued a citation on that one.

Personally, like all other things covered by the law, this subject is onesided in nature. Given the fact Indiana law finds that a person hunting from a vehicle in pursuit of game is deemed illegal there is no reciprocity law covering the converse. I have yet to read in the people hunting forums about any law protecting humans against deer hunting cars.

how can a rusted out old ford with no enginge be considered a motor vehicle? to me it wouldn't be any different than a blind, or a deer hut.

I think you did the write thing, I teach my son to never take a bad shot. If we need to move a blind or stand so next time we have a better look, its better than a wounded deer and a long night tracking. Not to mention you might bust him out of your hunting property and on to someone elses place. Our motto is we are out to kill deer not wound deer. Have a great opening weekend.
