What better place to ask this question than the campfire... Looking to purchase a log splitter and wanted to get eveyrone's thoughts on this. Not wanting to spend more than $1,200-$1,500. Any thought's guy's? BB

I got a 34 ton Swisher this year just a tick over your desired range this year and am having lots of fun trying to find something to stop the thing. The only issue I have with it, is it doesn't have a foot on the cylinder for the return stroke it a log gets hung on the wedge. Check out Rural King for Swisher, and Tractor Supply carries Huskee for about the same price with the return stroke guard foot. Unless of course Deertracks was offering to sell you his.....

My problem is that all the splitters are rated not to exceed 45 mph. Our woods is 50 miles away so that is a problem for me.

They are pretty cheap to rent for a day or two compared to buying one. I know there is a guy in greenwood on Craigslist that will rent his for 25 bucks a day if you search for log splitter

Found one in the catalog for northern that has large tires on it and a 2" hitch. I would think it's made for higher speeds. www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200326296_200326296BB

I just put mine on my trailer to take to my Dad's (45 miles away). It's not the speed that concerns me, it is not being able to see it when behind the truck.

I did 2 things, first feed my kids a lot of venison so they grew big and strong and 2, I don't cut big trees. If I do have too cut big trees, see solution #!.
Been cutting and heating for 30 years and the few times i did need a splitter I rented one. Highly over rated and in the way most of it's life.
Anyone that thinks there splitter is king of the wood pile has never tried to split up a big cotton wood. Next to impossible and the real kick in the shorts is the wood is worthless.
Your hauling fire wood from 50 miles away? Are you taking a tailor? Pull the splitter and see how it does, if it doesn't do well replace the tires or put it in the truck. 50 miles is a long way to go for a truck load.
I'd leave the splitter home and just load the logs.

I've been splitting up cottonwood over 4 feet in diameter. The only reason I can cut the trunk pieces is they are hollow in the middle. I would have agreed the wood is worthless until last year when I installed a wood burning furnace. This thing works best when it almost smolders. Cottonwood is better at doing just that than even it knows. I made the house so hot at one point all the windows were open with the temps in the low 20's.
