I must agree with Steve as well, Most well managed QDMA properties, work diligently to get buck doe ratios down to 1:2. To assume that our herd is no worse than 1:3 would be insane.

No actually its not an assumption its pure science in this particular case ot has been proven by almost evey deer study at every collage in the country. Sorry it boils down to the numbers and not what hunters beleive or see while hunting .

Well I have been actually manageing my deer herd for 25 of what will be my 37 years of deer hunting on my farm so yip I would say that the science and experts who are involved in this are very close to right on the numbers . I see almost as many bucks this includes button bucks as I see doe and doe fawns on the farm .

Well I've had years where I have seen more bucks than does. But that was only twice in 25 years. Last year I hunted all season and saw 6 deer. One was a buck for sure because my sister took it and it was a BB. The year before I saw 5 bucks. 4 of them were dead from other hunters and one I saw on opening day and my gun didn't fire because of the weather. But as a whole in the last 5 years I've seen probably 1-4 or 1-5 on the buck to doe ratio. Not that they aren't out there but the group I hunt with and the neighbors we have we get together ever night after dark and we have nothing to hide. That's just what we see. And as far as believeing what Scientist say...... Well they also say we came from monkey's.... Don't believe that either..... But come to think about it.... That might explain a few things... LOL.. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) BB

Well, you can run the numbers and show us how it can come out as something else, but a lot have tried and it just won't......it's what they call mathmaticlly impossible.

Getting back to "rule changes"..
I heard several "stakeholders" and Mark Reiter talking about multiple opening gun days.
They mentioned 4 opening days. The early antlerless weekend, the regular gun season, the muzzleloaders season and the Christmas break antlerless season.
Those are very doable WITHOUT messing with the firearm and muzzleloader season.
In fact I think they would be much better off to have two weekends of early antlerless in October instead of just one and they would have FIVE opening gun dates instead of four.
Inclement weather can completely negate the one October antlerless weekend.
These two weekends should run right after the youth weekend. Things will settle down before the pre-rut starts for archery season.
There is no need to shorten or move the gun and muzzleloader seasons.
This will work and will ease any complaints from the gun hunters.

Does anyone really think the antlerless only firearms weekend in Oct is really going to make an impact? Im not against it at all but just seems like the people around where I hunt wont go to the woods just for does. Again Im not against it. Im just curious. I wont be toting a gun that weekend but I will do my best to take a doe that weekend to fit in!!LOL

im with you boonechaser, wont be any guns on mine either. with that list of stakeholders all in favor, you can stick a fork in it. you guys continue to talk about the deer oriented stake holders and neglect the largest organization....farm bureau. the fat lady has sang.

They will not be the cure all they think they will. Wehn people can't kill bucks, showing up will not be a high priority for them. Kentucky tried it and did away with them after one year. Illinois has one late in the year and it doesn't result in much. Tis one WILL NOT solve the problems that will be created by the shorter seasons.

I personally like the antlerless only hunts, that time will be used exactly like any youth only season. With the exception of not shooting bucks.
Its an extra opprotunity for everyone.

If seperate tags are required for each of these extra gun seasons this could bring in alot of extra revenue to the state. I hope the DNR would use this money to fund the purchase of more state hunting land or improve the existing WMA's. I'm not confident that would happen though.

The only 2 issues I have with the proposals is the overall lose of time in the woods for gun/muzzle loader hunters and moving opening day completely out of the very end of the rut. The 2 days in October and the week of doe only around Christmas is actually something to be celebrated. Anything to give people more opportunity is great!

Agreed here as well on it will not fix anything and will not last also there will not be any gunning on my farms in Oct at all . And why wouldn't you? If i may ask. Two reasons . 1-- I do not allow the shooting of any doe on the farm unless she is wounded badly in Oct or any other time . Becaus the farm is lined by many hunters who every year shoot every deer they can and they always will so the doe and yearling bucks get a sfety on my home farm . 2 -- Aside from 2 or 3 hunts the first week of Oct to try to target one of the mature bucks here we do not go back out till the last 5 days of Oct . to pic up pre rut Buck movement . All that shoooting of animals there in Oct has ever done in the past was to stir the deer up ,put ,too much pressure in he woods too early in the season, and burn out the statnds durring the Oct lull . It has worked for decades and my rut and pre rut hunting is Phenominal every year.
