I'm curious as to how many people that are complaining about the Grouse populations own their own property and have done anything to help? Have you "clear-cut" your own property? That's what it seems your wanting the state to do. I'd consider a natural disaster (such as Katrina) like some have said to be the same as a complete clear-cut on state properties.
When you say we need a natural disaster such as Katrina to help the grouse what kind of impression to you think people get of the type of loggin your proposing that the state do? I've read several posts about the loggin in Morgan-Monroe. Before it started everyone said 5-10 acre clear-cuts would help.........that has happened in several areas. Many areas were select timbering and that wasn't good enough.
Small clear-cuts have taken place, select timbering has taking place, so what's next? Should we clear-cut all the state's public ground only to find out it "might" be something else effecting the grouse populations?
How are you managing your OWN property for grouse, and how is it workin out?

I don't own any property. If I did... and there were grouse around, I'd likely clear cut some of it.
Let's face it. Old growth timber grows squirrels, songbirds and nothing else. The thick is what EVERYTHING else likes.
Those are the places I look for.
Should we do that with ALL the states land... no, of course not. But cutting 1% of the states forests every year would help a lot. That would give us 50 years of cutting without touching HALF of what's there now. And in 50 years... they can start over.

So, no one is managing their own properties for Grouse. Yet, some expect the state to do the job for those that aren't willing to do it on their own property?

Comments will be posted the DNR website. Btw. If "(hey have their mind made up". Remember "they" are YOU! Sorry that I have to say it, but considering the ongoing fiasco with the survey and the proposed changes to the deer hunting regs, I'm pretty much convinced that the average hunter has zero influence on the IDNR.
