I am considering building an AR15 in 458 Socom and I have a few questions...
1. What are some of the better places to order parts?
2. Will I save much money building my own?
Thanks

The only place I know that does .458 specific parts and assemblies is Rock River Arms... For AR-generic parts, I order from: - Bravo Company - AIM Surplus - Larue Tactical (Best optic mounts going) - www.carricozarmory.com/lowers.htm (I've gotten both of my Mega Gator stripped lowers from these guys, $110) You won't save a TON of money, if you just want "an AR", but if you want to do aftermarket stuff to it, you can build it like that in the first place, and not have to pay for the stock parts in the package, that you're going to replace anyway... If you can put together a full lower for less than $425 (yes, you can), then you're better off buying the .458 upper half, and assembling the lower, yourself... For instance: $725 - RRA .458 midlength upper half $125 - Mega lower, above, shipped $70 - RRA LPK $40 - Complete mil-spec buffer tube kit (AIM) $92 - Magpul CTR stock (AIM) ==> $1052... $100 cheaper than the whole rifle, and you have a $92 aftermarket stock that you may have purchased, anyway... ETA: If you did a commercial buffer tube and stock kit (AIM), you can take out the $40 and $92, and replace it with a single $36, giving you a $955 rifle... Mike

There is TEPPO JUTSU as well but they are a little more pricey.

Been toying with the idea of building an AR myself .... never really had any interest in black guns but I wouldnt mind toying with one.
Do you just buy a lower ..... and buy an upper .... and put them together?

Do you just buy a lower ..... and buy an upper .... and put them together? That's pretty much it, you buy all the components and put them together. You have to buy the lower from or have it shipped to an FFL and the rest you can get from wherever you choose. The way I plan on doing it is buying the complete upper from RRA and then getting a stripped lower and putting all the pieces together. I just dont know what other components I want just yet, there are so many options out there.

You will save 11% tax money by just purchasing the upper and lower separately and slapping them together instead of buying the completed rifle. For someone new to the platform, I'd suggest purchasing a complete upper, as assembling one requires some specialized tools. Putting together a lower however, is simple, requires zero special tools, and allows the builder to choose from several quality triggers, grips and stocks to suit the needs of the end user. Be aware that .458 SOCOM ammo is in short supply and expensive.

Be aware that .458 SOCOM ammo is in short supply and expensive. I saw that they are anywhere from $2.50 to $3.00 a pop, definately won't be shooting it much outside of deer season. Kinda funny, I just bought a 44 lever action due to the high prices of slugs but now I am wanting to build one of these.

If you already reload, and plan on reloading these, it's not nearly that bad... Brass apparently lasts 6-7 firings, and they're the same bullets that the other .458 cartriges use...

I ordered stock and buffer tube yesterday and picked up a RRA lower and parts kit today. I installed all parts I could tonight and will install the rest when I get the stock and buffer tube in. Now I need to order my complete upper from SBR.
Cost so far:
Buffer tube and stock $132.00 Lower and parts kit $210.00

Does anybody know the difference between the CTR and the MOE? From pictures I can't really tell the difference.

Does anybody know the difference between the CTR and the MOE? From pictures I can't really tell the difference. Here is what I found on another site: "CTR has an additional friction lock to clamp in onto the tube, and spots for QD swivels. MOE lacks these."

Ok guys I need to start thinking about sights. Primary use will be deer hunting so I was thinking variable power scope, any suggestions?
