Few creatures in the North American woods can rival a turkey's eyesight , especially for motion . Don't forget your UV killer now that the deer season is over either , most birds can see into the UV spectrum , especially UVA , and may avoid your set up if they see you glowing in the underbrush .

decoys are a great thing to add to your set-up, especially when the whole flock comes in, those wary eyes are on them and not you, if you have to move, goooo slowww. turkey scout

Turkeys typically like to travel uphill to a caller, it allows for faster escape if the need be.

Just because there is no gobbling going on does not mean there are no longbeards out there.
I've been SURPRISED by many a silent mouthed bird.
Keep your movements to a minimum and keep your eyes and ears open ALL THE TIME even iof nothing is happening.

Try to set-up with the sun to your back, in the shadows of your cover.

Don't shoot jakes, they are next year's crop!!!
Even though you may want to: Last year had 3 jakes that ran 3 DIFFERENT long beards away in a river bottom field over the course of the first 2 weekends!!! Last weekend, the jakes were running when 1 boss gobbler showed up and I called him in SLOW for my dad to take his 1st eastern turkey. He didn't want to shoot a jake nor did I want him to, but he could have multiple times during the first few weekends.
ANOTHER FUNNY NOTE: THE 3 JAKES WOULD GET SO CLOSE TOGETHER WHEN I'D DO WHAT CALL?
GOBBLE TUBE
THEY STAY CLOSE FOR 15-30 MINUTES THEN SEPARATE BACK OUT AND GO ON THEIR WAY, IT WAS FUNNY THE 1ST TIME, THEN THE COYOTE WHO TRYED TO NAB A DECOY WHILE THE JAKES WERE IN THE DECOYS WAS ANOTHER. THEY FLEW UP INTO THE TREES ABOVE OUR BRICKHOUSE BLIND AND MY DAD DIDN'T HESITATE TO ROLL THE COYOTE (3.5, #5'S HEVI-SHOT ROLLED THAT COYOTES ASS) AND FOR THE NEXT 1.5 HOURS THE JAKES GOBBLED, EVERY FEW MINUTES AS THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK OF THE 3 DECOY'S THAT DIDN'T MOVE LET ALONE THE DEAD COYOTE.....WHAT A DAY!!! THAT IS WHAT MAKES HUNTING WITH A FATHER OR SON SO GREAT I'LL NEVER FORGET THOSE 3 JAKES AND THE FUN MY 59 YEAR OLD DAD AND I HAD TOGETHER WHILE BEING IN THAT FIELD WITH THOSE JAKES. LAST SATURDAY OF SEASON PAID OFF, THE 3 JAKES A FEW HENS WERE IN THE FIELD RIGHT AFTER FLY DOWN AND THEN AT 7:50 NO HENS AND 3 JAKES. THEN A BOSS GOBBLER SHOWED UP AFTER A FEW PURRS AND A SERIOUS OF CUTTING. HE GOBBLED A FEW TIMES AND THEN HE WAS COMING, AS HE APPEARED THE JAKES DISAPPEARED AS IF THEY HAD BEEN SHOT EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE 150 OR SO YARDS AWAY FROM THE TOM. THE TOM STARTED TO HANG UP AND STRUT ABOUT 70 YARDS OUT WHILE EYEING OUR DECOYS, HE THEN WENT INTO A SERIOUS OF DOUBLE AND TRIPLE GOBBLES, I INTERUPPTED HIS LAST SERIOUS WITH A FEW CLUCKS AND A NICE PURR....HE THEN WENT OUT OF STRUT AND RAN ALL THE WAY TO OUR DECOYS AND STARTED STRUTTING A MERE 10 YARDS FROM OUT BLIND WHILE CIRCLING THE JAKE DECOY. I THEN LET OUT A LOUD SERIOUS OF CUTTING WITH MY MOUTH CALL AND HE GOBBLED AND IT WAS THE END OF A GREAT YEAR!!! WE KNOW THIS YEAR IS GOOD TO AS THE 3 JAKES ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER LONG BEARDS ARE AROUND, HOWEVER, THE JAKES MAYBE TOO EDUCATED ON DECOYS AFTER SEEING THEM EVERY WEEKEND LAST SEASON AND FOR SEEING THEM FROM A BIRDS EYE VIEW ABOVE OUR BLIND WHILE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE DEAD COYOTE WAS AND THE DECOYS!!
CAN'T WAIT TILL THIS SEASON, GOING TO MISSISSIPPI ON MARCH 13TH FOR THE OPENER ON THE 15TH, A MERE 6 WEEKS FROM NOW!

Don't leave the woods at 9am when the birds stop gobbling. Late morning is one of the best times to get a lone Tom fired up for a quick kill.

Don't leave the woods at 9am when the birds stop gobbling. Late morning is one of the best times to get a lone Tom fired up for a quick kill. I crossbow killed mine last year about 2:30 in the afternoon. I couldn't hunt that morning due to church obligations and went out for the afetrnoon. A lot of the times the hens will be nested up and the gobblers are still out searching. I had three longbeards come into my decoys and I shot the first one in line.

hey guys, we all know how camoflage is very important to be a few yards of a flock of birds, i use cloth type head nets , but when those birds are in your lap and the boss is still trailing out of range, you got to be carefull not to spook any bird, so where that big eye holes in my mask i use camo make-up(around my eyes ) to make me total camoflage. haven"t had any birds get antsy since. turkey scout

Never, ever, not in your whole life, leave the house without insect repellent.
If you use a slate, always pack an extra striker. If you plan on "cuttin and runnin" take a bottle of water.

i would rather know where the boss turkey at 7 a.m to 9 a.m. than to know where he roosting at.why? because at fly down time ,he mostly knows where the hens flew down too, and thats where he going and this might be the opposite of your set-up(then you"re sitting at a dry hole), i like to know where there roosting at(with this theory i don"t flush turkeys off the roost), but i rather be on a travel route, could be a feeding area, struting area ,resting area, breeding area etc.pre-season scouting will help you to locate these areas, sorta like putting a puzzle together. thats plan a. always have several plans too fall back on ,because as the season progresses they change too. turkey scout

GOOD TIPS GUYS. Here are some of mine.
# 1 IS PATIENCE.
#2 is SIT STILL !!
# 3 is have confidence in your calling.
# 4 is dont give up on a bird you spooked. Give him a half hour then relocate and try him again.
#5 is stay in the woods . You cant kill em from the couch.

mid-day windy days hunting turkeys- tough conditions, i like to set up on a field, cause turkeys will head for them in windy days sorta like in the wooooods then they are back to the fields,in and out, also i like to have a decoy out if you can get one interest ,this would bring him to ya and this may be several yards across the field. a box call helps on the more volume of your calling. good luck turkey scout

hey guys , here a theory for the late afternoon hunt, turkeys like to circle, so if this is true , set up near a travel lane that leads to there roosting site. guaranteed a successful hunt! good luck turkey scout
