Tell me your set up: rifle, calls, etc. Tax refund is set to be here friday and want to get into coyote hunting. Just not sure what caliber to go with, choosing from 22-250, 223, or 243. This rifle will only be used for coyote hunting as I have serveral hipo rifles for big game hunting elsewhere. I will primarily be hunting large open fields. I am used to having other critters to hunt such as hogs and bear(in tenn) and some exoctics on our lease when i was in texas so just hunting deer and turkey is not enough for me. Since Im permanently in Indiana now I was hoping coyotes can fill the void for me. Help me out and point me in the right direction. Not looking to spend a fortune on a coyote rifle maybe later down the road. So i need a rifle, good glass, and some type of call. Tell me what works best for a beginner...

any of the guns you mentioned will get the job done. 243 & 22-250 are 400 yard guns, .223 is a 300 yard gun. a good entry level rifle is the Stevens made by Savage. Same gun as the Savage but doesn't have the Accu-Trigger. Most are very accurate out of the box. Costs $350 or less.
Spend as much as you can afford on glass. Any scope $200 and above usually is a decent scope. 4x12, 4x16 or 6x20 will get you on target.
My set up is a Savage .223, Weaver V16 4x16. This gun shoots just about any load I put in it. h.h.

I love my Stevens 22-250 , it has a short flutted barrel for easy swing my scope in a $80 Simmons and it's a killing machine no high dollar gun or scope needed just take the time to fine tune and you'll be good to go

IMO a .243 shooting a 65-85 grain varmint bullet will flatten a coyote at longer range much better than a .22-250 or .223. Most .22-250's have a 1-12 or 1-14 rifling and don't shoot the heavier bullets as accurately as a .243 loaded with bullets of the same weight. With the lighter bullets that the .22-250 shoots better like the 50 grain V-Max, the bullets don't penetrate as deeply as I would prefer and tend to blow a crater on the side or shoulder of the coyote. The .243 bullets carry more mass and penetrate better close range or long. The .223 can be found in faster twists, but runs out of gas faster with the heavier bullets. As far as scopes go, I would not go over 4x as the low end of a variable. It is hard to get a good sight picture of a moving coyote that is very close to you. 4-14x is about perfect or the new 2.5-15x scopes if you have a lot of money to spend on optics. Just my opinion, though.

I hunt coyotes with rifles chambered in each of the caliber the OP mentioned. In my experience the .243 and .22-250 are about equal in killing power, while the .223 struggles with the larger coyotes we have here in Indiana. I've experimented with several different calibers over the past few years, but I keep coming back to my .243 and .22-250 for coyotes. My .243 is a Remington model 700 BDL that I restocked with a CDL stock. I have a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 scope on it. My .22-250 is a Remington 700 SPS stainless. It is also topped with a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 power scope. I have AR-15 rifles chambered in .223 and 6.8 SPC that I also use for coyotes. They are both 16" barreled carbines, topped with 3-9 powered scopes.

well, i got a 243 barrel for my optma elite and put a 6.5-20x50 scope on it. not a real expensive scope bt will see how it does and then upgrade eventually. gonna put 85 grain bullets through it. Now lets talk about calling. I dont want to spend a alot on an electronic caller just yet, so how can i learn to use mouth calls, is it pretty esy to gt the hang of it or should i have an experienced caller teach me?

Predator mouth calls are fairly easy to master. I usually let the stand calm down 10 or 15 minutes, then start off quiet or even with a mouse squeak in case there is one close. Then I gradually grow in volume. Cottontails, and fawn bleats seem to work well, especially Primos' fawn bleat, you can get pretty loud with that. Good luck!

I would suggest you start off with a closed reed mouth call. Primos makes one that works very well. It's a Primos model 110 or 116, I can't read the model number on mine anymore. It's green in color. You can usualy find them at Gander Mountain. The closed reed calls are very easy to use. You may also want to buy yourself a coyote calling video or two. You can learn the calling sequenses and rythems you need to use when you call.

I also have used a 12 gauge with 3 1/2 inch #4 buck using a "dead coyote" choke tube This has given me very good results out to 60 yards many times depending on where and how you will be hunting this could be the way to go

Any suggestions would be appreciated. you can use any lite it's best to put a red lens on it i usually call for a few minutes and then turn it on and scan for eyes , you can leave it on until the calling is over The rechargeable lights work best , the kind you buy for coon hunting allow for hands free use and you can buy rd lenses for them a s well try going to www.huntsmart.com they carry several brands and type
