Yes, bearded hens can and do reproduce, nest and rear their young like a "normal" hen. I read an article years ago while doing some Genetics research at Purdue that confirmed this information. I can't remember where the article was from, but the research came out of Pennsylvania.

The bearded hen I shot two three years ago had an egg in her so I assume they can reproduce. h.h.

Yes, it probably is a hen. But if the bird is actually black and has a beard, you are looking at a melanistic bearded hen. The odds of which would be pretty astounding. Kinda like winning the lottery...twice. Both are genetic traits and not hormonal. They are not connected either. Bearded hens can and do reproduce at the same rate as non-bearded hens. Lovett Williams states that "around 4% of adult hens have beards." I'm gonna stick with jake. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) ![](http://www.kaiserkalls.com/bearded%20hen.jpg)

HE/SHE came back Saturday morning. My daughter was yelling that it was just a few feet from the back of the house, but I was in "the office". By the time I was able to go look, it was around the side of the house. I looked really close at it's legs and I think I saw very small spurs. I tried to get some more pictures, but they did not show the legs clearly. I will keep watching.

My friends ex-wife had a beard. That would explain why she's the ex-wife.
