www.the-deer-hunting-guide.com/skinning_deer.htmHas anyone ever tried this method? A friend of mine who taught me how to process deer skinned deer using a similar method. He used a board instead of a golf ball. Worked like a charm. I haven't tried it since then. At that time I didn't have a beam strong enough to hold the deer while pulling on it with a vehicle. I do now. I think I will try it on my next kill. Rog

Local processor has an anchor in the floor with a short cable attached to it. The end of the cable that's not anchored goes around a ball hitch under the hide; the body is pulled upwards with an electric winch mounted to a BIG beam.
I've not seen it done, but I imagine it's a LOT faster than how I've been doing it by hand!

I wish I could do it that way, but I'd end up pulling off the bumper of my car...

I can't figure why I would do this anyway...by the time I make the same cuts that are needed for this -which basically are the cuts that I do any other time-it only takes about 10 minutes to finish skinning by hand, just as long as I have a sharp knife. Plus I always hang mine from the back legs anyway to help cooling so I would also have to swap hanging ends too. In the grand scheme of things for me in butchering a deer, that is not a lot of time savings and I can still hang it from my polebarn rafter and not have to worry about tearing it or something else up. Now if someone would come up with a way of easily removing all the silver and fat from the meat-that would definitely be something that I would be looking into. That step probably takes 50-60 % of my butchering time but maybe I'm too picky. Grinding used to be the other major chore but not anymore-maybe I can get Danf to post some pics of that operation

I meant to take pics of the grinder setup while I had it, but forgot to... ;D
As for the silver skin- you'd be amazed at what goes through the grinder at the processor's. Fat too, though I think a greater percentage of fat comes off than silver skin. I probably take off at least 50-75% more than they do.

Agree with you there dadfsr.
As far as silverskin removal, I discovered a few years back that an ordinary electric knife works beautifully for this task. Great for cutting steaks to a uniform thickness as well.

Have you ever hit a rock/root with a push mower before? There is a reason for not having a bar where you can fall on it... (See Chico... I still got your back... )

I've not seen it done, but I imagine it's a LOT faster than how I've been doing it by hand! This is the method we use, only we hang the deer by the back legs, and pull the hide from butt to head. It works great! You dont need a golf ball because the knot of the tail does the same thing. The only thing you have to watch out for is the big old tuff bucks, if you are doing a head mount. So much force is being applied to the hide that you can rip the deer in half if you are not paying attention to what you are doing.

That red ranger in the background looks like Derek's new truck-Danf knows what I'm talking about It'd be too much "work" to make that work once assembled... It needs a motor... This one's been circulating the 'net for a while, but it was assembled by the person Dad is referring to- his nieghbor!! This is a better mower for Chico. ;D ;D ;D
