So I decided to finally get a 458 socom upper as I allready have several ar's in 223. Was wondering if the RRA uppers were ok or if they had any problems. The 458 socom website is down so hard to get answers there right now. I was also looking to buy several boxs of 300 gr ammo but no luck finding that right now for sale either. Does anyone know where I can get the ammo and if the RRA upper is a good one and where I can buy one? Thanks in advance Rman

Welcome to the 458 club
I am reasonalbly new to the 458 also but I think I can answer some of your questions. Some people have had trouble with the RRA uppers but I own one and have not have had any trouble at all. The common thread with the ones that have had trouble seems to be rough chambers. Ammo will be hard to come by until Starline makes another run of brass, they are the only manufacture and apparently other calibers are taking precedence over 458 socom. As far as I can tell there isn't any factory ammo available until more brass is available. The folks that have ammo are not going to turn loose until they know they can get more factory ammo or brass. A lot of people are ordering brass to up the amount on backorder to coax Starline into making a run.
I am debating getting into reloading just to keep my 458 fed. I have enough ammo to get me through deer season then something will have to give.
Fun gun to shoot if you can find ammo.
Hope this helps. Bob

Bob thanks for the reply. What factory loads have you tried and what kind of accuracy have you been able to obtain?

I have only tried Corbon Hunter 300 grain Jacketed Hollowpoint I picked it from Midway before they ran out
My setup is capable of 1" groups at 100 yards using a cheap 4X scope

I got an 11/16" 3-shot group at 100 yards with Wagner Accuswage 300-grain ammo. I only have about 25 rounds on hand, but since I hunt with a bow more than a firearm, an annual practice shot to check my zero and maybe two rounds for two deer each season should give me enough to hold out for eight more years or so.
Mine is a custom Lothar Walther barrel that was fabricated by the gentleman (Marty ter Weeme) who created the .458 SOCOM round, but I have friends who have the RRA uppers. None have had any problems with them.
