Just wanting to know what everyone does to kill time while deer hunting, especially during the early bow season? Sleep, read, nothing? The only thing that I do is take a MP3 player and listen to the Bengals game if they are playing. Other than that, I just sit there and enjoy the outdoors, and maybe snooze just a little bit.

I haven't brought anything in the past, but I'm kicking around the idea of bringing a good camera with me this year - seems like every season you end up seeing some interesting wildlife that would make for some good shots. I am kind of concerned that it would be distracting and the thing would get in the way though. Has anyone tried this?

I watch, listen, & identify the critters in the woods, in & on the water, & in the sky along with keeping constant check of the winds & thermals. And last but not least I'm always making mental notes of shooting windows & yardages 360 degress of my stand.

I stay focused and look for deer. I beleive if you really make the effort you will see 2x the number of deer that you would otherwise. These deer may not be in range, but you never know where they will end up. Have you ever had a deer just "show up"? I sure have. Staying focused will reduce the number of deer that will surprise you. You'll find that maintaining a high level of focus is a good way to make time go by. I often check my watch and see that more than an hour has passed since I last checked, when it only felt like half as long.

...... I AM ALSO TUNED IN TO THE AREA I'M HUNTING!!!! i feel like i'm focused , i enjoy all wildlife, mostly birds, that keeps me looking for movement, one thing i notice over the years is woodland birds have a movement, ten to twenty minutes later is a deer movement, thats when i'm really focused. i just love all the sight and the sounds of the wooooods.......when i hear a woodpecker making a hammering noise , that is MUSIC to my heart and soul...love those pesty squrrels too!....my grandson has great eyes for all wildlife, but when he gets bored for not seeing much ,he breaks off dead branches and twist them ,that usually brings in a buck!!! i'm also am going to bring my camera more to the wooooooods and enjoy it all!!!!!!!.....good luck- guys and gals, its getting closer to the best time of the year!!!..........TAKE A YOUNGSTER ON YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE.................turkey scout

Started reading a few years ago. I also play a pocket solitaire game.
Ill usually pick a new book at the beginning of the year and read a bit when I am going to be sitting for more than 3-4 hours. Really helps on those all day sits .....

I'm kicking around a new idea this year. I love to take it all in as well, but at about noon without seeing something for the last two hours, I will admit it can drag a little and my confidence starts to disappear. I may go down to the library and grab a book on cd, and then download that to an mp3 player. I used to travel a lot for my job and listening to books was a great way to pass the time. I haven't decided yet though. I'm kinda against taking electronics into the woods.

I also try to stay focused and look for Deer. However one year, I was hunting late in the afternoon and sort of dozed off. I woke up in time to see three Deer run past my stand and I wasn't able to get a shot at them, due to them running.

You guys that just Hunt are more focused than I. The attention span comes and goes. When it goes and I am fighting the urge to get down and walk around which always ends up with me leaving. I will try to think of the deer I've shot in the past. Especially if I am sitting in a favorite place. Lots of reminising of old times past, good friends, future plans, and more of that type of thoughts. I mean sure I check shooting lanes and yardage like a OCD, check the wind, time, watch birds, bugs, and furry critters. But even then there is plenty of time to kill.
I don't do electronics in the woods either, don't read, and certainly wouldn't have headphones on. Sure does let my mind wonder all over which is what hunting is all about to me!

Mostly just sit and look around. Used to take an easy read book and read some on long sitting days. Read a couple of paragraphs and then look around for a few minutes. May have to go back to that. It sure did help on those especially quiet days. And seemingly that is the norm at Fairbanks.

I do carry a camera with me now and take pictures other than that I just hunt. I was lucky enough to get 625 hours in the woods and hunt everyday last year. I can honestly say I never get bored.

My eyes are like lasers when I'm hunting, looking through the trees, woods etc. trying to spot wildlife..I kill a couple hundred deer every night, hunting in my mind..what if he comes from there? Where's my shot?..How bout there?, How many yards is it to that tree? What if he comes right under me from behind? Do I have a shot stright down? Is there any limbs gonna be in my way? etc.....also alert always thinking... what if? I try to create every posssible scenario and how I'd react. Then when the moment if truth comes you're not caught off guard..

Early archery, I try to carefully control the mosquito population to pass the time. Does the therma cell really work? I would like some feed back from someone who has used one before i buy one.
