I was curious about this as well, but the 07-08 hunting guide lists .38-40 as a legal deer cartridge, which is not straight walled. Ballistically, I don't really have a problem with this.

There is nothing in the regs about "straight walled".
Diameter and length is it.....

And the recoil isnt bad either. It isnt even in the same league as a slug gun or my savage smokeless MZ. Feels about like a 30-06 or 308 in a similar weight gun. When I get the encore barrel i might work up a load using the accubond 225gr bullet at 2500fps or so. My biggest problem right now is I need to upgrade some of my reloading equipment. I really, really want an rcbs electronic powder dispenser and scale combo. Manually weighing each and every charge is so time consuming. In this vein, do you have a set of Lee dippers swilk?

I was skeptical about them at first, but they surprised me. You can figure out the dipper that will get you close to your charge, and then trickle the rest. I didn't give very much for mine. Certainly they are a wonderful low tech workaround for the RCBS chargemaster.

I do have a set of dippers ..... they do a good job in their intended application but the rcbs would be sweet .....

Although the 358 BFG sounds like a very good cartridge; it does, IMHO sounds like it sort of a "Gray Area" concerning PCR Ammo. It's more rifle like than pistol. I really believe the intent of the State of Indiana to allow "Strightwalled" Traditional pistol cartridges and not wildcat cartridges except for the few they have listed. It would be up to the IDNR as to whether or not it would be a legal cartridge for Indiana Deer Hunting. Taken fro the Indiana DNR website: "This proposal does not restrict the cartridges to straight-walled, nor does it restrict the type of action for the rifle. This proposal also does not limit the cartridges to commercial types only; custom-made cartridges (wildcats) that meet the specifications in the rule would also be legal to use. The DNR is not proposing to list all of the cartridges that would be allowed in this rule proposal due to the large number available and the possibility of wildcats (custom-made cartridges) that could be developed within the specifications of the rule."

Depending on powder type, I've been happy with the Lee perfect powder measure. I loaded 50 .223's the other night with IMR 4895, and out of those 50 only 6-8 of them had to have powder trickled in once I had the metering screw set. WW 296 seems to be too fine for it to meter right- I will get some powder escaping when I turn the measure drum. But then my trickler doesn't really like 296 either.

DANG!
A 35 cal, 180 gr bullet moving at 2700 fps is an ideal deer round for my hunting areas.
I want one.
I have a Savage model 10 in .308. If I get a new barrel reamed for this cartidge, will I need to make any other modifications, such as to the bolt? I've never messed around with building guns, and I'd have it done by a 'smith. Just wondering how much money I'd have in the required mods.

The .38-40 WCF is a traditional handgun cartridge that was also chambered in lever action rifles, as was the .44-40 WCF.

Well, we finally got the encore barrels in earlier this week. They sure are pretty ......
Been busy with other projects so I havent really done much with the gun other over the past couple of months.
Intend to load up some rounds this weekend and see what the encore will do.
